Communities devastated for decades by the callous programme of pit closures with no alternatives offered.

Local council services savaged by Tory austerity.

Bus services hacked back by privatisation and Wakefield left with one of the worst rated bus companies in England.

A housing crisis through not replacing properties sold through right to buy - 15,000 families now having to rent privately...

An end to our NHS through more privatisation.

Massive cuts to social security for our disabled and most vulnerable local people.

Chaos in our public services - less services delivered for higher council tax.

No plans for our places or town and city centres - more decline and empty shops.

Another Labour backdoor deal?

How much more taxpayers money has the council paid out to secure this?

The people of Wakefield need to be told.

Wakefield District Green Party (WDGP) notes the freehold Community Asset Transfer of the Lightwaves Centre from Wakefield Council to Lightwaves Community Trust.

Our 2026 local elections manifesto contains a core ambition to deliver Real Change for the local voluntary and community sector across our district.

This includes a commitment to make local voluntary and community organisations the partner of first choice, and to strengthen existing community organisations through providing council expertise, training and other opportunities.

We wish Lightwaves Community Trust all the best in making a success of this asset transfer. Lightwaves is a valued community asset. We hope it, and current and future organisations based on the site, can go forward in delivering services, tackling issues and creating opportunities for all who use its services.

We understand that the transfer of the freehold of the building to Lightwaves Community Trust will make it possible for the Trust to secure funds from outside bodies to pay for essential maintenance of the building and its facilities.

We hope Lightwaves and the Lightwaves Community Trust, goes forward demonstrating probity, transparency, value for money, inclusivity across all our communities and as a model for other organisations in our district considering asset transfer.
