Press cutting Lancashire Telegraph, 20 April 2008: Shepherd's pie recipe rumpus. Subhead: Petrol bomb threat in tomato topping row. By ANDREW BELLARD A dispute over the contents of a shepherd's pie proved to be a recipe for brotherly disharmony. Blackburn magistrates heard that John Garvin thought that the pie his brother Michael made should have been topped with tomatoes but Michael disagreed. The upshot was that John, who was hit over the head with a shovel, reacted by threatening to petrol bomb his brother's flat. And he ended up spending a night in custody to allow tempers to cool. John Garvin, 47, of Montague Street, admitted a breach of the peace and was bound over in £100 to keep the peace for 12 months. Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said the brothers lived in separate flats next to each other. On the day of the culinary dispute they had been drinking together since 7am. "The argument started because there were no tomatoes on the shepherds pie that Michael made for tea and John thought this was wrong," said Miss Allan. John called his brother an offensive name and then said he was going to petrol bomb his flat. "Michael was concerned by this threat because on a previous occasion John had started a fire in his own flat," said Miss Allan. Liz Parker, defending, said her client did not accept making a remark about petrol bombing his brother's flat. "He does say that his brother hit him over the head with a shovel and it is very clear there was a lot of trouble over nothing," she added. (The article has a pullout quote which says “It is very clear there was a lot of trouble over nothing” - LIZ PARKER in large letters) District Judge Peter Ward, who imposed the bind over, asked in court: "You can make shepherd's pie without tomatoes can't you?" But 'legal' opinion at Blackburn magistrates, where the issue became quite a talking point, was divided. A female defence solicitor said it should be made with lamb and topped with sliced tomatoes and that a pie made with b…

ME: [wincing, covering up Starmer's ears] sorry, do you mind not talking about politics around Keir? He doesn't know about scary things like nuclear war or poverty or Peter Mandelson and we'd like to maintain his innocence for a bit longer

KEIR: my father was a drill bit

ME: that's right Keir!

A lot of Brits are shocked to discover that our country isn’t very popular around the world. One of the reasons is our willingness to be complicit in war crimes.

We need to stop holding the bully’s coat.

[Scene is a TV news DEBATE FORMAT like Newsnight or Laura K.
In the studio, NIGEL FARAGE is a guest on one side, and the GOVERNOR OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND is the other guest.]

1
FARAGE:
It's simply outrageous!

2
FARAGE:
Replacing Sir Winston Churchill on the £5 note with a badger is woke madness.

3
BANK OF ENGLAND GOVERNOR:
Mr Farage, I can assure you that I and my colleagues at the Bank of England have listened to your concerns,

4
GOVERNOR:
And we have gone to great length to ensure
that the badger is, in fact...

5
GOVERNOR:
...Anti-woke.

[The £5 note appears on the screen behind him. It shows a badger, with a black military cap on its head - looking suspiciously like a Nazi SS officer's cap.]

6
[Beat of Nigel Farage reacting silently to the image on screen]

7
FARAGE:
The badger is anti-woke.

8
GOVERNOR:
Indeed!
[Pointing at the design on the screen]
If you look down the bottom we've included a quote from him...

9
[Close up of the quote at the bottom of the new £5 note, which reads]:

"It's not racist to be concerned about immigration, Carol"
- The Anti-Woke Badger

10
FARAGE:
The badger... said that?

GOVERNOR:
It's a comment he posted on Facebook.

11
FARAGE:
Well he's quite right! It's not -

12
[Farage pauses again, distracted by the image on the screen]

13
FARAGE:
What's with the hat?

GOVERNOR:
He's into history.

[ends]

the thing is, people could easily just watch the fucking shitty wizard show and keep their mouth shut abt it. but they want to not only do whatever they want, they want to tell people about it and argue about how they're still a good person. they want everyone else to assuage their guilt for them

Wind & solar are currently producing 65% of Britain's electricity. Meanwhile, renewables now offer 30,000 more UK jobs than oil and gas. Meanwhile, we're in a climate emergency. Meanwhile, we're in a fossil fuel supply crisis. Meanwhile, the Tories and Reform want to scrap Net Zero. grid.iamkate.com

I think it's perfectly possible to understand the UK's backsliding on LGBTQ+ rights without needing to specifically talk about and emphasise Muslim countries. Just seems like you're actually wanting to say something else.

The UK has fallen from 1st to 22nd within Europe, on LGBTQ-focused protective legislature. It's narrowly ahead of Albania - a Muslim country - and dead last in western Europe. This is owing to a surge in anti-LGBTQ sentiment that needs FAR more attention than you or your party have given it.

Cabinet ministers and No 10 advisers strained for loyalty. But it proved too difficult for some. "He is," said one influential aide upon their departure from Downing Street, "the least intellectually curious person I have ever met." Said another politician upon whom Starmer relied heavily:
"He can only prepare by reading briefing books for hours on end. He doesn't brainstorm. He has no fixed views on anything. There's no clarity because there's no belief. There's no belief because there's no understanding. There's no understanding because there's no curiosity." Said a senior civil servant who observed him closely:
"He is not a compassionate man. He's careless about people around him. It's just not warm. He just doesn't think very hard about other people." A once-close adviser, witheringly: "I don't think he has a theory of power. I don't think he's ever sat down and read any history, or has any idea of how power works. I just don't think he would be attracted to the kind of historical figures who got stuff done."

What did I say? I said: when Sir Keir has outlived his usefulness, you will not be able to miss it.
