He is also suggesting that congestion matters for the rest as they are not like NYC. It’s beyond the capacity of transportation engineers to make every place like NYC.

Very pleased to share our article on infrastructure interdependency. We showed how interdependency between transportation and electric power networks can complicate power outage restoration. Congrats to my student Tasnuba. Thanks to NSF for supporting this. 🧪 doi.org/10.1061/NHRE...

If you become successful, I will learn from you how you did that all by yourself with zero education.

The goal of an advanced education program is to efficiently teach people how to ask the right question. If you try yourself to learn how to ask the right question with zero education, you have to design and implement an advanced education program.

Right turns on red puts pedestrians at risk, Mineta study says A 1970s-era federal law requires states to allow right turns on red lights. Mineta Transportation Institute researchers say it’s time to change that.

"Right turn on red movements are generally unsafe for pedestrians, bicyclists,..." the report says. I did not know that RTOR was proposed as an energy conservation measure. A study by @shamstanvir.bsky.social and others.

Analysis of the confined crowds at the San Fermín festival in Spain shows that dense crowds can self-organize into macroscopic chiral oscillators, coordinating the orbital motion of hundreds of individuals without external guidance, according to a paper in Nature. https://go.nature.com/3WKkb8r 🧪

Without looking at transit ridership, the analysis of the effect would be incomplete. The number of car trips can drop, but the number of bus/train trips should increase. Hence, congestion pricing encouraged the switching from personal vehicles to transit.

Will Americans Ever Lose Their Taste for Telework? The pandemic-era rise of remote work has hammered transit ridership and devastated downtowns. A transportation researcher looks at the long-term effects of our new commutes.

Georgia Tech prof Pat Mokhtarian has studied remote work for 40 years. She told me 15% of Americans now telework, triple the share before Covid.

Mokhtarian believes the shift is permanent -- and that it will transform US transportation.

Black Saturday bushfires - Wikipedia

The LA fires may last longer than we expect. The Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, Australia lasted more than a month in 2009. It was also a perfect storm event killing 173 people. It was summer in Australia, but this is winter in LA. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_S...

Many are saying this is unprecedented. But we have limited knowledge of perfect storms and Black swan events. Our decision makers should be aware of those events and should use their judgment. We highlighted this ten years ago and a lot of works should be done in this space. doi.org/10.1007/s110...
