That was a revelation to me, honestly

I went to a cartoonist panel once where all the panelists happened to be old friends from the 90s Berkeley zine scene. Someone asked what they thought about why Berkeley had produced so many cartoonists and 3 out of 4 said "We were going to art school in SF but none of us could afford to live there"

Any artist still in the Bay Area (who does not have a rich partner or who doesn't work in tech) is living in the far East Bay. We're all out there! And it's the presence of artists that makes a creative culture. It's not like there's something special in the soil or whatever

Thinking about all these beloved and deeply important art institutions closing in SF. Not a suggestion, but a plaintive wish--I wish the comics/art community would start taking root in the East Bay. I'm not even talking Berkeley or Oakland, I mean like Richmond, Antioch, Martinez etc

'AI Is African Intelligence': The Workers Who Train AI Are Fighting Back Kenyan workers are still the underpaid labor behind AI training, moderation, and sex chatbots. The Data Labelers Association is fighting back.

I met with AI data labelers in Kenya who are organizing their colleagues to fight the brutal working conditions and horrible pay given to the workers at the "bottom of the AI supply chain." They believe the NDAs they've signed are unenforceable so are speaking out:

Thats EXACTLY it, I wonder that all the time!! What will be the piece of info or experience that finally makes the penny drop??

Seems like people who use it are:
a). Embarrassed to be using it, but
b). Consider themselves to be using it in the least problematic way, which
c). Conveniently seems to suit them pretty well!

Examples:
- (on flyers) "At least I don't use it for the art, only for text."
- "Written by a human" (seen on a book cover with AI-generated art)

At a recent zine fest, I circulated a little manifesto against using AI for protest flyers and wound up talking about AI with a bunch of folks. the most common sentiment I picked up was: "At least I only use it for this, not for that."

Organizers have collected 14 lotion bottles, two deodorant bottles, and one AA Battery that detainees have thrown over the fences with notes attached to them.
