@aaronadmirals.bsky.social,
your last podcast for this season was truly special. thank you for sharing all of the stories you have. a lot of the players had it right when they said this loss hurts more because of how well we played. you're truly a treasure to the hockey & sports media industry!
I asked Google AI to create a @hurricanetrackingchart with some flourishes.
All I can say is wow.

As of 5 days ago, there were at least 50 open leadership positions in NWS offices, not to mention the vacancies in forecasters, electronics technicians, and other support staff.
This reduces the capacity for outreach, increases forecaster fatigue, and limits the effectiveness of the NWS.
HRRR? RRFS? Those models don’t exist without NOAA’s Global Systems Lab.
The physics used in even more models? Not possible without us.
Decision-support tools like DESI and IDSS Engine used throughout the NWS? Also us.
What my lab does is *integral* to weather prediction and keeping people safe.
It's actually wild. There's literally no mention of why Jackie Robinson is important in the MLB press release. At all. Just that he "played his first Major League game on April 15, 1947."
HAPPY TAX DAY!
How much would you spend on a year of tornado warnings? The average US taxpayer spends only $4 a year to help fund the NWS. It’s a smart investment—every $1 invested in NWS yields approx. $73 in social benefits.
🌪️❄️ Support science. Support the NWS.
Stay tuned for more this #TaxDay

them: "don't stare directly at the sun with your camera lens!"
me:
Saw two folks passing each other in the hall at work today. Here was their interaction:
Person 1: "Hey! You hanging in there?"
Person 2: "NOPE!" *keeps walking*
If that doesn't describe the state of everything right now, then I don't know what does 😂
Napkin math says there are 7 days in a week and weather is 24/7....so 7 meteorologists = not a lot of staff
Who needs radars or weather models to operate, anyway
Everyone is worse off with a reduced NOAA workforce. EVERYONE.
We literally make daily decisions due to expected weather conditions like grabbing an umbrella or securing furniture ahead of strong winds.
And anyone can access that information because it's already covered by taxpayer dollars.
to my fellow students: i understand your concerns for your future completely. myself, i'm starting another major just to ensure there's at least one door available for me after graduation.
in this time of darkness, we need to be united and support each other.
to anyone reading this who may have been affected by the layoffs today: i'm so sorry that our livelihood has become a political weapon. you are valid in your feelings, and i want you to know that your fellow scientists stand with you.
being a STEM student and watching your friends and mentors worry about their jobs is something no one prepares you for. the constant fear of "will i have a job after graduation?" is a deep concern. PLEASE call your representatives and inform them of the importance of NOAA/NWS and science in general!
“You’ll be fine, just get another job. Surely you can do science somewhere else!”
They literally want to defund science. There will be no science jobs left to be had.
Call your representatives.
Today’s NWS/NOAA firings are an atrocious decision. We’re losing hundreds of our best and brightest going into tropical and severe season. With further cuts on the table that would cripple essential services reach out to your congresspersons.
To everyone at NOAA fired today:
You are an incredible human being. You signed up to serve the public. I deeply appreciate what you've given to your team, to NOAA, to our country as a whole.
Your firing is unconscionable. It runs counter to the values we stand for. And we will stand up for you.
In recent decades everyone has been real proud of how we’ve been able to lower disaster death tolls.
At this rate, those days are over.
My heart breaks for those NWS/NOAA employees who are being let go today. National Weather Service is already incredibly understaffed and every meteorologist is critical and essential. This will undoubtedly cost lives as severe weather and hurricane season ramps up.
All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.
To all NOAA probationary employees today: I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry.
Reach out if you need to talk or want to chat about job opportunities. I’ve served on many AMS committees and have some thoughts about the landscape.
so um- why haven't you come by to say hi?

I am incredibly honored to announce that I earned an American Meteorological Society (AMS) Student Conference Poster Award for my research poster presented at #AMS2025! Thank you to all of my supporters for giving me the confidence to participate in the Student Poster Competition.
