The “Bootstrap” Line: How a Sarcastic Phrase Became America’s Favorite Saying Growing up in a predominantly middle-class, white suburb of Chicago, the culture around me embodied the mentality of "pull yourself up by your bootstraps!" I grew up believing the phrase meant picking yourself up after suffering an adversity and moving on with life without complaint. That narrative has become ingrained in our current political environment, and specifically, has come to mean that being a strong American means not whining, but taking action to improve your situation.

Do you love the phrase, or not?

How Polarized are We Now As Compared to the Past? Historians to the Rescue I’ve been watching Ken Burns’ “The American Revolution,” now streaming on PBS. My first reaction startled me. Rather than depressed or bored, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief, because the story of how we became a country was both the same as, and yet so much worse than, the polarization we’re experiencing today. And that’s the power of history: to provide perspective.

What's your guess? Is this the most polarized the US has ever been?

How Conflict Entrepreneurs Use Disgust to Divide Us We've all heard about how conflict entrepreneurs work to keep us in a state of outrage in order to manipulate us, either by getting us to donate to their cause, vote for them, or buy their products. What isn't talked about as much is how politicians, political parties, influencers and the like use disgust to divide us. I learned about the topic on…

Can you detect when someone is trying to manipulate you by triggering your disgust?

The War Powers Resolution on Iran: What it Means and Why it Failed One of the reasons I’ve enjoyed writing this blog is because it encourages me, as a common American citizen, to learn more about complex political issues. Doing so has the added benefit of decreasing my emotional reactivity to what happens at the national government level, and increases a more balanced perspective. When I read about the War Powers Resolution on Iran…

What do you know about the War Powers Resolution? Me: nothing, so I decided to find out.

I recently watched a documentary about the male influencers making money off of the “manosphere” on a message that women are no more than subservient body parts.

Forget that! So here's my message to you great people—male and female— who resist that messaging.

How Self-aware are You Regarding Political Manipulation? I’ve been looking into the roots of political polarization for well over a year, and much of it seems to be rooted in human nature itself, and specifically, our collectively low level of self-awareness. We think we’re logical, and therefore impervious to manipulation by conflict entrepreneurs whose job it is to influence us, when most of us are not. In a 2017 article titled…

Are you making any headway on dropping the "us" or "them"? If not, this article is for you!

Citizen Spotlight: “Citizen” Teacher Wes Chaput You can view the interview on the Vigilant Positivity YouTube channel. As soon as I began reading Wes Chaput’s “The 7-Minute Citizen: Your Power, Your Rights, Your Democracy,” I felt hooked by his positivity and the succinct way he lays out what it means to be a citizen. Only 79 pages long, the book feels like an entertaining primer on our power, rights, and civic mindset, and why democracy matters.

Did you learn civics or what it means to be a citizen when you were a kid?

Santa Cruz surfers hailed for rescuing family of 6 after boat capsizes at Steamer Lane Surfers in Santa Cruz are being recognized for their bravery after rescuing a family of six from a capsized boat, with the fire chief praising their quick response.

What a fantastic story of courageous citizenship! I believe most of us Americans would jump in to help in an emergency. Such a great example of what it looks like to come together! www.ksbw.com/article/sant...

My son isn’t much of a social media guy, but I’m posting this poignant cartoon in honor of his birthday today. A sharp guy, he’s got a good sense of humor, training in philosophy, and a good grip on the state of the human species.

So the climate is wonky. For sure. In honor of the birthday of my first novel, THE WIND THIEF, about an woman who believes she alone must stop a war of winds, what's your wackiest encounter with Mother Nature?

Me: seeing a wildfire race down a hillside on I-5 when driving south into Los Angeles.

Apparently they're big on university campuses because it's easy for them to get around and maybe less likely they'll get beat on than in a city setting.

We saw a ton of these delivery bots on the Oregon State University campus. The slogan on them reads “Meals on 6 Wheels,” because they do have that many wheels. I live in Silicon Valley, but have never seen these. Has anyone else?
