Happy Praying Mantis Appreciation Day, to all who celebrate…

CHILD PRAYING MANTIS: Dad, who are we all praying to exactly?
DAD PRAYING MANTIS: Depends which religion you belong to
CHILD: So not all people follow the same religion?
DAD: No, son… we’re in sects

In a well-lit indoor setting, an individual stands on a light-colored concrete floor, addressing an unseen audience. The person, presumably a woman, is dressed in striking rainbow-striped overalls, complemented by a burgundy and brown plaid shirt. She also sports a beanie and glasses, and is barefoot, adding to her eclectic appearance. She holds a small flag with horizontal stripes of black, grey, white, and purple in her right hand, while a microphone is in her left, suggesting she's speaking or performing. To her left is a counter with light green tiling and several chairs, and behind her to her right is a green cushioned booth. Above, the ceiling is dark, adorned with various light fixtures, including a disco ball that adds a festive touch to the atmosphere. On the floor near the individual, a shopping bag with floral prints is placed, with the bag adding a touch of personal belongings to the scene. The overall ambiance suggests a casual and intimate setting, possibly a small gathering or performance space.

Travel Tales From Beyond The Brochure: Svalbard Hello :) Last year, off the back of my 100th country visit to Norway, I spent three nights in Svalbard, one of the most northern archipelagos in the world. Though I wasn't there for long, I felt it was an interesting place to do a podcast about, covering history, wildlife, culture, and of course the ethical aspect of travelling to somewhere like that in the first place. Not a spoiler: I did not see a polar bear. Topics discussed in this episode are: Parts One and Two: Housekeeping and Introduction Part Three: Overview * So remote even the Vikings didn't go there * Whale-hunting, fur-trapping, Wild West Mining Towns, and how they became Norwegian * Svalbard v Spitsbergen * How its different from Norway * Population un-Density  Part Four: Wildlife & Environment * This is the land of the Polar Bear * Birds, but not in winter * Longyearbyen feels very small from above * There are no trees, only scree Part Five: Things To Do In Longyearbyen * The Airport is surprisingly insta-ready * The Seed Vault * Museums * The world's most northerly brewery (and why it only dates from 2015) * You don't come here to die * What do you mean 'Shoes are Banned'?! * The Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights Part Six: Ethical Travel * The notable effects of Climate Change * Cruise Ships and the dichotomy of tourism v environment * How locals view tourists * What some businesses are doing for sustainability * Eating local means eating whale and seal * The transient nature of the population * Visit Svalbard's tips for ethical tourism Part Seven: What I did when I was there * A local orientation tour * Hiking Sarkofagen * Local Beer * Sailing along Billefjorden * Accommodation in Longyearbyen * Did I visit ethically? Part Eight: Final Thoughts . As always, if you have anything to say about the topics, or indeed about my podcasting in general, leave a comment or let me know. and where I'll be mentioning future podcast episodes if you want to make your own contribution. - if you like what you hear, and want to access exclusive content (or just to show your appreciation), then head on over. There is a contribution in this pod from my friend Julie, who blogs at "", which is an apt name for someone who's also been to Svalbard. Until next time, bye for now. :)

New podcast episode out!

This one's all about Svalbard, touching on history, environment, wildlife, culture, tourist attractions, and the ethics of visiting in the first place.

Contrib from @polarbearjulie.bsky.social :)

I *think* I was trying to say something along the lines of 'reality is subjective but regardless of people's perceptions and beliefs, and regardless of what 'masks' I wear to get through everyday life' (including who I am and how I present), I exist in reality, and as an asexual'.

YMMV ... lol

If it helps, the post seemed like a good idea at the time and it made sense on my head.

For the record, after a sleep, I can say that neither make sense in the cold light of morning.

A woman with long hair and glasses is walking barefoot down a paved road. She is wearing a black sweatshirt with a print in the asexual pride flag colours of white, grey, and purple ("It's not that you're not hot, I just don't care", it reads), dark capri pants, a small black waist pack, and a large gray backpack. She smiles as she walks toward the viewer. The road is bordered on the left by a grassy verge with some yellow flowers and a wooden fence; on the right, by a grassy verge. Further back, on the left, are green fields with a single-story white building; on the right, green fields with a couple of white buildings. The sky is blue with some white clouds. A trail marker post can be seen on the left of the frame.

It's International Asexuality Day.
To acknowledge an invisible identity that many people don't even think is real, here's an image of a person who may not be real and who is wearing an asexual-branded sweatshirt, which people never notice.

We exist!

Look, just because we've got better things to do than sex, doesn't mean we enjoy doing taxes!

I love how International Asexuality Day is also the start of the tax year in the UK

Happy International Asexuality Day, for all of the tired, exhausted and overhwhelmed ace and aro folks out there. The best way to celebrate your ace and aro-ness is by taking good care of yourself. Take a nap, go for a walk, take your meds, feed yourself, and drink water. Be good to yourselves.

My bedroom window is wide open.

Is it because I'm too warm? No.
Is it because the room's too stuffy? No.
Is it because of a bad smell? No.

It is because there is a wasp in it. It is lurking on the window and I'm going nowhere near it to shove it out.

I am cold. :D

As an aside, I love the way your work trips are to such varied places.

Some weeks Grenada, some weeks Stafford.

Who knows what you'll get next time. Could be Lusaka, could be Luton.

It is the UK's equivalent of I-80 in Nebraska.

Straight, functional, quick. Which, lbr, is the best way to pass through Cambridgeshire. And Nebraska.

The book "Dying of Whiteness" gives one example after another of white people being willing to literally die if it means a Black person won't also receive, for example, decent medical care.

It's an insane read, but enlightening as to this mindset.

This is the same mindset as ‘gender critical’ transphobes - they’ll literally lobby to make things worse for women, so long as it hurts trans people! 😣
