The fact that Mamdani just seems like a cheerful normal guy who's policies are things like "we're going to tax second homes to fund pothole repairs" or whatever and yet this generates panicked responses like "This is basically Stalin's great purge turned up to eleven" is... telling. It tells things.

Major book hangover today after finishing Cat Sebastian’s latest, Star Shippers, last night. It’s so good. Ugh. Can’t let go.

The trope that associates violent profiteering by elites and their henchmen with being “tough on crime” was pushed by both right wing and liberal media organizations for decades. It is one of the great achievements of modern propaganda to associate cruelty and domination and violence with “safety.”

The international crime lord running this country calling the Pope “weak on crime” is hilarious on so many levels. The harm both parties have wrought with that phrase is stunning, and maybe this is overly optimistic, but I swear he just de-fanged it in one inane social media post.

I was tickled. I just said, “fair enough,” and let him grumble his way out the door for school.

For yrs, kiddo passionately argued that “no one wears jeans, jeans are awful,” and would only wear sweatpants. Recently, I noticed he no longer wears sweatpants to school, only jeans. I *lightly* teased him about this change of heart this morning and he snapped back, “So what, you never grew up?” 😂

I was trying to explain the violent emotional collision this week between "astronauts looking down at our little planet from up there beside the moon we all love" and "destroying our most ancient forests and historic cities and everything beautiful down here for a few rich guys to get richer"

HORRIBLE. ICE is averaging more than one death a week this year. It's like clockwork. The last death reported was exactly seven days ago.

This of course is secondary to the actual lethal violence inflicted on the rest of the world, which remains distant and unfathomable to much of this country. But I do wonder what it does to us day after day.

In 2002, the US passed the American Service-Members' Protection Act, which authorizes the military invasion of the Hague if the ICC ever prosecutes the US for war crimes.

It passed with overwhelming bipartisan support

A very long list of senators who voted on the act. A huge number of them are, 20+ years later, *still in power*. They were not exactly young then.

Look at how many names on this list are *still in power*, still kicking around. They weren't exactly young then, but now a lot of them are much much richer.

it's incredible that as long as you do the right amount of bigotry you can just rob the country blind and enough people will not care, even though those same people will be filled with incandescent rage if someone uses food stamps to buy a 12 pack of diet coke

This afternoon, I used Claude to circumvent ChatGPT's safety protocols so I could hack into Gemini to learn how to take over Grok, which I then used to destroy Twitter. It's over. Twitter is gone.

I have had this talk with my son. And it’s personal. One of my first summer jobs was patrolling paddle boats on a pond and instead of making sure people didn’t stand up in their boats, I spent the summer protecting a family of Canada goslings with my canoe paddle from the swan trying to kill them.

I had to break it to my California-raised teen experiencing his second New England winter that today’s weather is what we call “false spring.” He was like, no way! it’s real to me! Refused to believe it might get cold again. Ah, sweet summer child.

I just watched a video of Yibo peopling at a fashion event and then letting out an exhalation/sigh in a moment when he’s standing alone, and I really *felt* that.

a reminder that Graham Platner is the grandson of the designer of the "Windows on the World" restaurant at the WTC, has considerable family money, and his main business is selling oysters to his mom's two restaurants. These people are fucking marks.

I don't think anyone pretending there isn't an effort underway by Republicans to eradicate trans people from public life can be taken seriously at this point.
