DANISH ELECTIONS IN A HIGH-CHOICE SOCIAL MEDIA ENVIRONMENT
Are we seeing the first signs of social media fragmentation & the rise of echo-platforms?
Not quite! Very large platforms still draw a crowd across the political spectrum. But our dataset analyses also reveal some outliers and divergences.

This is a real video from the official White House account on a war that is currently killing people. I don’t know how the US is going to come back from this.
The post was “JUSTICE THE AMERICAN WAY. 🇺🇸 🔥”
Great to see extensive NYT & FT coverage of our paper on the fossil-fuel profit bonanza during the previous war-induced oil & gas price spike. Links in Gregor’s thread. 👇
Should teenagers put their phones down? Not so fast! 📱
We reached out to health communication and media-effects expert @mattminich.bsky.social, who studies how media affect minds and behaviours at #univie, to discuss his behavioural research on teenage digital media use. 👆

From the abstract:
"We find clear and consistent evidence that whites who receive their political news from Fox News are significantly more likely to support core tenets of the GRT [Great Replacement Theory] than those who do not."

This is a demagogic article that does not refrain from equating critical AI studies with climate change denialism: «Indeed, it’s a little disturbing how closely this discourse follows climate-debate patterns set down 20 years ago by the right.»

Karl Polanyi rightly saw the subordination of the human or social purposes of governance to the logic of an impersonal market mechanism as the deepest flaw in market liberalisation (Polanyi 2001, p. 76). More in: link.springer.com/article/10.1...
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
"Der spanische Ministerpräsident Sánchez: „Soziale Medien sind zu einem gescheiterten Staat geworden, und wenn Demokratien beginnen, für Ordnung zu sorgen, werden ihre Besitzer nervös. Wir werden trotz ihrer Drohungen weitermachen.“
For years, I've criticised countries like Russia & Georgia that try to prevent foreign funding of civil society. Now I'm starting to wonder whether we need similar rules: to stop Russian influence operations, certainly, but also to stop the US boosting the far right in Europe. What times we live in!
The White House is now embracing the “nihilist penguin” meme as a symbol of courage and independence for walking into the unknown/certain death. In reality, this behavior is often seen in older penguins becoming disoriented due to cognitive decline. So it’s basically penguin dementia...ohh the irony
Social media convinced me about 10 years ago that, for all the imaginative psychodrama that gets acted out, mostly people aren’t thinking.
Social media monitoring systems, cellphone location tracking, facial recognition, remote hacking tools — now being turned on Americans by ICE to target protesters. bit.ly/3Kq348R
The reactionary centrist logic is simple: if the left does something bad it’s the left’s fault, and if the right does something bad, it’s also the left’s fault for making them do it. It’s a simple formula and once you see it every one of their arguments is the same
We have to be clear about what the Trump Administration is doing: They are taking basic American virtues and freedoms — the ability to speak truth to power and freely — and turning them into crimes. We must see through this.

This isn’t a moral thing. This is a protecting yourself thing. If you go over there to “verify” something and end up inadvertently viewing and thus downloading illegal images, you have – pay attention now – downloaded illegal images
I really enjoyed my conversation with professor @abenewman.bsky.social.
To make sense of Trump’s foreign policy in Venezuela and Greenland, he argues it should be seen as part of an emerging “neo-royalist” world order, driven by the interests of hyper-elites rather than national interest.
Not particularly apropos of anything but:
At some point we are gonna have to face up to the fact we’ve spent most of the last decade blaming “the algorithm” for stuff that’s mostly just human nature and culture.
The ethical and legal damage will be with us forever but it’s the raging incompetence that will strike first, within the next few days.
Trump/MAGA oppose democracy, international institutions, and a US-led, rules-based, liberal international order.
They’ve never been anti-interventionist, let alone anti-imperialist or anti-war, supporting Trump’s first term use of force, Russia invading Ukraine, term 2 bombing Yemen and Iran, etc.
Adorno: "Lies have long legs, they are ahead of their time. The conversion of all questions of truth into questions of power not only suppresses truth...but has attacked the very heart of the distinction between true and false..."
As a staunch European I honestly find it humiliating, how EU leaders talk endlessly about strategic autonomy and bold defence and democratic values and then when the moment comes to actually stand up for those things, they always - always! - react like a kitten in a thunderstorm
If Xi Jinping invaded Taiwan right now, and toppled the president there, on what grounds would the United States object? Or have any credibility to say anything?
Maduro is a brutal and oppressive dictator of Venezuela.
Trump has no legitimate legal basis for military action against Venezuela under United States or international law.
Both of those facts are simultaneously true.
