Katharine Lake Berz: Canada’s birth rate has fallen to new lows. What’s the best way to encourage people to make babies? Researchers and advocates have long argued that governments should respond to falling fertility, though they do not agree on the best way to do so.

Family-friendly policies include: affordable housing and child care programs, after school care, funding for health care, k-12 and post-secondary education #ONPoli

Employers should cover work-related travel and other expenses directly rather than require employees to float their employer an interest-free loan while subjecting them to a byzantine reimbursement process that will take at least a month and entail multiple rounds of paperwork.

First, judges don't apologize, or comment, or explain. That would undermine the administration of justice. 2nd, Madam Justice Anne Molloy is an exceptional judge who had the benefit of all the facts and seeing the witnesses under examination. 3rd, the decision wasn't appealed, so it stands. #ONpoli

Toronto can confirm these findings as well with only 10% of customers arriving on Bloor Street in The Annex by car when the Bloor bike lane pilot was installed in 2016 from Shaw to Avenue. #BikeTO #WalkTO #TOpoli #VisionZero #UrbanTruth web.archive.org/web/20260203...

Fascinating that this counts as an unpopular opinion in North America. Turning right on red should be banned outright.

A lot of people think “surely nobody wants to fuck someone they think is subhuman,” and these people need to be taught about the concept of heterosexual men.

Thanks @bikeottawa.bsky.social for challenging their city staff recommendation against banning right turns on red. It's unfortunate Toronto hasn't seen much advocacy on this matter; not even for their downtown core. #ottbike #ottwalk #BikeTO #WalkTO #TOpoli #ONpoli #VisionZero

Read this and then get the book: “Bad Bunny showed us that when he said, “We are Americans” at the Grammys, he wasn’t merely referring to citizenship status. He was challenging this country’s ever-narrowing definitions of who is — and is not — American.” #GiftLink

UK recognises Palestine as an independent state Deeply symbolic move comes seven decades after end of UK mandate in Palestine and formation of state of Israel

Too little, too late. But I'll still give it my 👍

As a millennial who learned in college that “performative” was the most cutting insult imaginable (and one that instantly proved one’s superior discernment) I fully agree. There’s a weird moral emptiness in the critique. I really think performance and play are crucial to building movements

The majority of organizing happening in Minnesota isn’t just peaceful, it’s INVISIBLE. Moms showing up who won’t be interviewed on TV, people whose ICE patrols don’t turn into viral video. The grocery runs, the donations, the people filming bc they happen to be there. Please remember this.

Self-described 'agitator' Yves Engler found guilty of harassing Montreal police officer Yves Engler, a Montreal author, had been charged with obstructing the work of Det.-Sgt. Francesca Crivello and two counts of harassment.

I have various feelings about Engler for various reasons, but this ruling is very concerning to me as a criminal law professor. I hope the decision gets appealed, because if mass-emailing police (or politicians) counts as criminal harassment then I’m not sure what doesn’t.

This is why organizing that reaches for relationality is central, not secondary - it breaks the capitalist idea of us as atomized, individual consumers and compels us to act in solidarity with others. And, perhaps more than anything, it's a politics more rooted in cultivating belonging than ideology

With so many of us watching the tremendous mobilizations in Minneapolis, culminating in the call to action against ICE today, I wanted to share some of what I have gathered from talking to comrades in Minneapolis over the past few weeks. A few things stood out:

A too large proportion of tenured folks refuse to acknowledge the crisis of precarious in higher ed.

However.

In a moment when the ability of anyone to speak publicly without repercussion is under threat and all university admins push precarity, abandoning the best protection is not the way.

51km/h: 80% fatal to pedestrians.
65km/h: 100% fatal to pedestrians.

Both of those are big problems, especially on a street going through so much residential land.

Toronto could lose the green building standards we’ve had for 15 years if Doug Ford’s #Bill17 goes ahead.

@thestar.com reports that developers are against the plan… probably because they don’t have to pay when poorly built homes flood or have high energy costs.

Opinion: By letting public spaces and services fail, our cities are breaking a fundamental promise to the people who live there Cities can’t honestly sell people on urban density if they cannot assure them that the infrastructure needed will be provided
