For example - Arietty was saved by the dunk tank, & won the next challenge.She was then eliminated in an episode where she ‘played the game’ and bombed. It made for great television!
Let your contestants find ways to bend a rule, be messy, fail! It’s entertaining! That’s the point.

Season 17 had 3 non elimination episodes, one of them being a meh double save because two strong contestants were in the bottom. The race is tight & stakes are high; if someone had been eliminated, it would’ve been shockingly good TV.

Drag Race has been hesitant in taking risks. Season 14 was the never ending season because contestants weren’t being eliminated. All this while having established that only “one” thing gave you immunity.
Season 16 had a non-elimination episode which rendered the season’s gimmick MOOT.

If you didn’t do well in the challenge, had an okay runway, and were out-performed. You go home.
The show followed its own rules and committed to it, which made for compelling TV.
It’s a competition show. This season has been great because it’s letting the contestants play the game.
