A picture of a rather dilapidated copy of "The picture of Dorian Gray" There is visible water damage to the cover and the plastic cover is yellowing. Obviously, not evident from the picture but there is a truly foul musty smell emanating from it!

Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic!
Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....

WOW: The NHS has ordered staff not to use the phrase 'It's raining cats & dogs' in fear of upsetting people from other cultures and religion.
Britain has gone absolutely

The NHS has ordered staff not to use the term "It's raining cats & dogs" as it may offend foreigners.
Tough
If you don't like it jog on is what I think
The NHS needs to get back to concentrating on making people better & not being more concerned about offending

For the love of God, could the "common sense" brigade PLEASE develop some actual COMMON SENSE?!

No, the NHS has not ordered staff not to use the term "it's raining cats and dogs" for fear of either upsetting or offending anyone...

Please engage your brains for a minute🙏

FDP: An Insider's Perspective For the past two years I have watched people who have never logged into the system confidently explain what is wrong with it. I am speaking up because I have watched the public debate about FDP become...

I have been hoping to find some more detail on the NHS use of Palantir, this is the informed perspective of the guy who until recently was leading the NHS development of the Federated Data Platform.

Even if the next administration wusses out and doesn’t throw everyone from this administration in jail, I feel like somehow this hapless creature will end up taking all the consequences. I bet he was always the kid left standing in musical chairs

The USA season 45 was pretty ropey but they have really jumped the shark with season 47.

Very pleased to find another Honeysuckle Sawfly in the garden. Impressive and burnished gold. We have lots of Honeysuckle and it's another great plant for wildlife.

Poached eggs are recipe eggs. You want a poached egg on your kedgeree to burst just before you eat it.

Yes, I was trying to remember if ours took 6 or 8, I seem to recall 8 but that seems excessive.

Thank you, and sorry to Conor, but at least my memory hadn’t totally deserted me.

On the same subject, I always get annoyed by the policing of common names, such as deciding that a Hedge Sparrow has to be called Hedge Accentor because it isn’t a Sparrow - it’s a common name, not a taxonomical designation.

This map used to do the rounds in the other place, I’m not sure who created the map but it is my recollection that a @mooseallain.bsky.social thread collected the data.

I still don’t understand why we aren’t building solar on supermarket car parks? This is the White Rose Centre in south Leeds, is it technical, political or financial restrictions?

Have you watched Jack Tati? The sound is much more spare and I think it works better for what is a similar comedic style.

THE FACES OF THE DEAD . . . Between the covers Can crime novels teach you anything about a location? Fans of the late Phil Rickman would argue that they knew the Hereford/Wales borderlands through his Merrily Watkins novels. Readers of Jim Kell…

Especially lovely to read this thoughtful review on publication day...

Yep, my mum had a letter about an appointment in the Endocrinology department at St. Thomas' hospital

When you get there, Endocrinology is not listed on the A-Z of departments

It's under 'Diabetes and Endocrine'

It shouldn't be like this, it should be a simple thing to address

A roman mosaic in mostly shades of brown featuring 9 panels and a border of stylised waves. Four of the images are head and shoulders shoulder portraits of women who I understand are personifications of the seasons. Each corner panel includes a bird and a stylised image of what I thought might be a jellyfish or medusa but could be something else entirely. The central panel is two men but I’m not certain what they are doing and I can’t find a description.

There must be some scope to reverse that change though, also missing from those figures is the loss of redistributive EU investment, has that been replicated since Brexit? The North of England having some of the poorest areas in Europe used to do quite well in terms of EU investment.

I was going to say rockpooling. Bathyscopes, or homemade or just buckets with a clear bottom and most modern smartphones will take photos in shallow rockpools.
