(2/2)

(1) 6/6/6/8+4 / 8/8+3 / 6 / 6/8/6/8+4 / 8/8+8 / 6/8+2 / 8 / 8/8+8

The most distinctive aspect of this song is (to my ears) its ever-changing measure groupings, always a bit shorter or a bit longer than expected.

Learned Aegisub to try to explain that in an intuitive way. Worth it.

Daicon, back in context - fullfrontal.moe The two Daicon shorts, Daicon III and Daicon IV, are still today considered to be emblematic monuments of otaku culture, but also represent a corner stone

Matteo Watzky's piece for @fufuro.bsky.social on the Daicon openings highlights the geographic, gender and political context, arguing that they are not just a celebration of (proto-)otaku culture but an attempt to redefine it.

The History of Gainax, Episode One - The Daicon Openings/Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise YouTube video by TJTheEmperor

TJTheEmperor's five-part History of Gainax is monumental and I can't recommend it enough.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5w6...
Very long but nicely split into small parts, with a compelling narrative of the studio's rise and fall. A fantastic one-stop shop for anyone even slightly interested in Gainax.

Watching this was a mistake.
Watching this was a mistake. YouTube video by BmoreBrass

@bmorebrass.bsky.social 's video is a nice account of watching GQuuuuuuX as a newcomer to Gundam
www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUWd...
Highlights that GQ not only shares its love for First Gundam, but successfully transmits it to new viewers.

In particular, checked out episode 2.01 (Zeta groundwork), which has a very nice recap of the shifting context of the early 1980s.

Also maybe check out The Ramparts of Ice next season by the same author
Similar-ish setup but much heavier emotionally, fingers crossed the adaptation turns out well

Polar Opposites is fantastic and super cute, the manga is great and the anime manages to capture the magic
Recommended if you want a sweet romance which doesn't drag things out for no reason and has a great ensemble cast (plus, they're all pretty emotionally intelligent!)

my seasonal watching is a group watch affair, hence the limited slots
we try to stick to 5 shows max, but with sequels it got pushed to 6 shows this season: Frieren S2, Jujutsu Kaisen S3, Medalist S2, Oshi no Ko S3, Journal with Witch, and You and I Are Polar Opposites

It's actually one of the shows I dropped! though not for lack of quality at all, to be clear
I checked out the first episode and loved it, but it just barely didn't make the cut due to limited slots
(I did mean to keep watching it on the side, but that rarely pans out)

This season of anime has been pretty fantastic
I don't know that any show from this season is in running for my Anime of the Year, but every show I've been watching has been executing at a really high level (and I've been watching more shows than usual)

(unfortunately for this joke, this episode (Sailor Moon ep 27) was written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa, not Yōji Enokido)

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX

@osgpod.bsky.social
Listened to their GQuuuuuuX eps10-12 discussion and their postmortem.
I especially liked the postmortem question "What does the kira-kira mean for you?"; reading the kira-kira as "the promise of Gundam", the question echoes the "search for our own Newtype".

@japanimationpod.bsky.social
Checked out their "Weekly Suit Gundam" episodes on GQuuuuuuX Beginning and GQuuuuuuX itself, some neat production insights I'd missed.
They also have older episodes on First Gundam and an upcoming Tomino retrospective series, may have to check those out.

Side 6 Soundwaves was my companion listening during the airing of GQuuuuuuX. I also listened to the discussions on the First Gundam novel trilogy; nothing too specific to GQ but a neat listen.
