It is a strange experience watching this go on when even if the strait *had* opened today, there's a huge amount of disruption baked in here - we're hurtling towards the part of the problem that can't be solved by marketing.

This just…isn’t true. The assets being bought fund the export demand - the US spends a lot! His problem is the distribution of demand and some abstract idea of global trade balance that is more an article of faith than an economic necessity

I do think the textbooks should say, by now, that one of the downsides of tariffs is that they open up opportunities for this kind of corruption but I think a lot of undergraduate economics just focuses on communicating the core canonical models.
