Pastel drawing.

Drawing in mainly black ink, primarily in silhouette, of a hen standing on a pumpkin on the vine, bending her head quizzically down towards it. The pumpkin bears a grinning expression like that if a carved jack-o-lantern. The hen's comb and wattle are the only touch of red gouache.

Some progress on my Christmas card illustration. I can tell that not painting much has affected my confidence quite a bit. I’m surprisingly happy with how it’s turned out so far, but also terrified to add a few more watercolour layers. Which I think is needed in some places.. (before I add pencil)

Lines are mostly done, just got to add some background stuff before I start panting.

Another one.

I feel like I need to get out my regular pencils and watercolour paint again though. Let’s see if I can make that happen tomorrow.

I wanted to start on my Christmas cards early for a change, but I have zero inspiration yet. 🥲😅

It really is quite a challenge to pick all the colours. It’s much easier to use oil pastels and then mix colours on the paper.

Definitely a fun challenge to pick a colour and then hope it turns out to be the one I wanted though.

Did a bit “treat-yo-self”, and bought a fancy set of soft pastels. Definitely fun to try out all the colours.

Here’s a small thing I just made.

Some recent soft pastel sketches. I definitely struggle with this medium, but I also love playing with this material.

Little sketch. I used khadi paper with one layer of pastel ground on it, but I think I either need to skip the pastel ground or add more layers. It was hard to get rid of all the white background where it didn’t work. Maybe I should’ve added a bit of colour to the pastel ground before adding it 🤔🤔

Some more pastel playing. Layering and picking the right colours is kind of tricky.

I also think just one layer of pastel ground on watercolour paper may not have been enough. 🤔

Not great, but fine for a practise piece. I do like the corner on the top left.

Learning about how to layer colours here. And I also use a watercolor paper with pastel ground on top of it this time. Pastelmat definitely works better, but is also so much more expensive!
