The Heart of Software Engineering Still Beats - Annie Vella A few weeks ago, I had a conversation that’s stayed with me. A colleague from another department said: “I’ve always been able to read and understand code, even debug it, but I could never write it.” S...

Have you ever caught yourself missing that spark you felt the first time code you wrote leapt off the screen and did something cool? I have. So I traced it back to its roots and wrote about why our craft still matters, even as AI types for us.

This is wild

Spain blocking possibly 75% of all internet traffic - as most of it proxies through Cloudflare, and they blocked CF IPs

Also blocking all of Vercel right now

Shows how strange court orders aimed to shut down select few sites can take down most of the internet in the country…

Teddy Ruxpin - Wikipedia

Does anyone remember Teddy Ruxpin? It was one of my favourite toys when I was a little girl. I can’t help but wonder what a Gen AI version of Teddy Ruxpin might be like. Is anyone working on this? 🤔

The most important role of a software engineer in the age of AI coding tools is becoming:

Be a GREAT code reviewer. Spot mistakes in the generated code. Reject it / fix it to make it work correctly.

How do companies interview for this skillset?

You won't like it but:

What an honour to be quoted by @charity.wtf!

This was a heartfelt piece that I’d been meaning to write for a while. I’m grateful it resonates with so many.

The SDLC Strikes Back: Adapting to AI-Driven Development - Annie Vella Earlier this year, Lovable celebrated their biggest milestone yet - more than 12,000 (!) new projects created in a single day. The very next day, they went down. The irony? Their success became their ...

Ever tried fixing a system only to have it push back? That’s the SDLC. Optimise one part, and new constraints pop up elsewhere.

With AI coding assistants speeding up dev, we’re seeing new challenges emerge. Where are you feeling the pushback?

What It's Really Like Using an AI Coding Assistant - Annie Vella I’ve now spent a couple of months using Windsurf fairly regularly and I thought I’d share some of my experiences with it. To set the scene, I’m a software engineer with over 20 years experience. I hav...

Learning to use an AI coding assistant takes hands-on experience and deliberate practice like any other skill - but it’s so worth it!

Agents All The Way Down - Annie Vella The concept of agentic AI absolutely fascinates me. An LLM on its own is already mind-blowing, but building much larger systems where hundreds of specialised LLMs work together as components, with yet...

Dear Software Engineer: It's Time to Reclaim Your Role - Annie Vella Apologies, this is a long one - clearly I’ve got a lot to say on this subject! It didn’t take long after ChatGPT was released for me to start seeing how fundamentally this technology could transform s...

My first post on here!

We say "AI won't replace engineers - we do more than code" yet created "Product Engineer" for those who actually do those things. My research shows 78% of engineers now code less with AI.

Time to reclaim what software engineering means.
