I just typed something into a monster stat block that I'm pretty sure is against the Geneva Convention. I can't even share it here because I don't want black vans to show up at my house. My players are gonna LOVE this monster.

It's great when this happens because the encounter you designed just goes back on the shelf for later use. It's like getting a two-for-one!

I like Alignment in D&D YouTube video by SaluteTheFlumph

I like alignment in D&D so much that I yapped into a microphone about it for about 90 minutes.

I busted out my PHBs from across several editions to examine how the concept changed from 1e to 5e. Some of what I read surprised me!

I am incredibly lucky that I get to play D&D with exactly the people I want, year after year. If you asked me to list my five ideal players I would just hand you a list of my five current players. I can't imagine having a problem I can only fix by getting rid of my friends.

I end up with dozens of unused NPCs after my initial planning for a campaign. This isn't wasted effort because
1) I love the creative process of inventing characters, and
2) the unused characters go into a bucket for later retrieval.
The main character of my novel spent years in that bucket.

Sir Thissle the Standfast
Officially, Sir Thissle’s remit is to function as warden of the lands and forests of Darach-moors, and to organize against outside threats. But everyone in Brightmarket knows the old grey-furred grouch to be the jerbeen in charge. His heraldry is a silver spear on a dark green field, representing the Wood and his charge within it. It’s said he knows every banner and knightly oath by heart, going back twelve generations. No one in the Wood takes a broken vow or noble pretender more seriously.

I'm drafting a bunch of potential NPCs for my next D&D campaign. I have no idea how many of these I'll use or which ones will go on to be important characters. Just kinda depends on which way the players go. But fingers crossed for the old grouchy mouse knight.

	1) A paper airplane flies in the lecturer's direction from the empty seats. (Acrobatics 12)
	2) An aggressive heckler disagrees with one of the lecturer's points, forcing them to defend their position.
(Int + relevant skill, DC 18)
	3) A rotten tomato flies at the lecturer. (Acrobatics 15 or poisoned for the duration of the lecture)
	4) A second aggressive heckler accuses the lecturer of plagiarism, forcing them to either properly cite their
source or defend their position as an independent idea. (Int + persuasion or deception, DC 18)
	5) End strong (Popularity skill check, DC 10 + 3 for each previous failed check)

The current Flumph dungeon is a grand library long since lost. Here's one of the weirdass encounters my players had to contend with:

Here's the post everyone else is doing, I think this is all accurate. #retrogaming

The tl;dr here is that "I want to make a Persuasion check" is wrong, but "I won't let you make a Persuasion check until you make a persuasive in-character argument" is also wrong. And even a good DM can't know where in-between you're most comfortable, if you don't tell them.

I have five players, each with their own roleplay style. The basic "describe what you do" is usually fine, but they each need the stage set a little differently. One prefers acting out his scenes, another describes them in third person, another responds well to probing questions.

As a DM, I find asking, "What is your character trying to accomplish?" cuts through a lot of this. Some players think out loud, others struggle to come up with good ideas, others just aren't comfortable roleplaying. But everyone knows what they want from a scene.

If you're feeling underserved by your DM, and your character's social skills aren't being given a time to shine, there's nothing wrong with asking for what you want. If the answer's "no", at least you're better informed about the kind of table you're sitting at.

If your DM isn't letting you do things this way, it's probably indicative of a mismatch in your roleplay styles. Some DMs can correct for this, others are only comfortable running for players who are on their same wavelength.

The basic interaction of 5e is: describe what your character does (or wants to do), and the DM calls for a roll if necessary. You don't have to actually stand up and give an impassioned speech. Simply stating what your character wants their speech to accomplish is enough.

"Why can't I use skill checks instead of roleplaying? My DM doesn't make my friend prove he can swing a huge battle axe before he's allowed to roll to hit!"

This is a DM problem, not a system problem, and certainly not a specific-to-5e problem.

My ideal style of social mechanic for a TTRPG:

Nothing.

I don't want rules governing how I can or should roleplay, and neither do my players. We respect each other enough to operate without guard rails. The odd skill check covers our bases, and otherwise we just... talk to each other.

Thanks for sharing your perspective! I'm a rules tinkerer at heart, so when I see a list like the one you provided, I roll up my sleeves and get to work. For me this is a strength of D&D, not a weakness.

Just, whatever you do, don't try to run ship-to-ship combat from Ghosts of Saltmarsh. Oof.

Can you provide an example of "a lot more work"? I'm having a difficult time envisioning a situation in D&D I can't quickly run as some version of d20+mod (e.g. the core gameplay mechanic). I tell my players what to roll, and what the roll is meant to model in the fiction, then we move on.

My favorite thing to do in response to the argument that D&D either can't do [thing] or does [thing] badly is to sit and smile and remember all the times my players and I had a blast doing [thing] in D&D.

So many youtube videos be like, is such-and-such game worth playing today? In 2026?

And the answer is always YES. 100% of the time, yes. Play every old game, forever. Listen to old music and read old books too. Be nice to old people. My goodness.

Just so we're all clear:
βœ”οΈCrapping on D&D. Fine, D&D is a game.
βœ”οΈCrapping on WotC. Fine, they're a company, and not a very good one.
βœ”οΈCrapping on a specific person who said something gross. As you do.
❌Crapping on groups of people you don't know. Here, you become that which you despise.

A very angry gamer says some not-very-nice things.

Speaking as a DM who is about to run a game exclusively about talking animal people, this sort of post is exactly the wrong energy to be putting out into the world. An Uno reverse played on a mean-spirited expression is still a mean-spirited expression.

Taskmaster is the greatest TV show of all time, and I'm just not gonna argue with y'all about it. I've seen like 40 seasons and I would watch 400 more. I hope they figure out how to make a US version work at some point.

All this to say that I'm pretty Bob Ross when it comes to making mistakes at my table. Some stories need to get messy before they can be memorable, and happy little accidents are just one way to add texture to a campaign. Why not lean into them and see where you end up?

Another time, in a dungeon I designed, I had a trap listed in my notes as "+8 to hit, 1d6 bludgeon", but no description of the actual trap. The players literally never knew what hit them. To this day I have no idea what I originally intended that trap to be.
