I’m working on a major project for WAX called "The Top 100 Singer-Songwriter Albums of All Time."

I want this list to be defined by the artists keeping the craft alive today. If you’re a singer-songwriter, what are your 5 essential albums in the genre?

Tag a songwriter who needs to see this!

WAX | Juju Gothic music is more than just this album, but it wouldn’t exist in the same way without it. While Siouxsie’s looks may have been the most recognizable aspect of their image, their music is what kept people hooked. They started in the 70s, but Siouxsie and the Banshees are a uniquely 80s band. The 80s was a time when subculture could thrive like never before. There was only a growing market for the jagged gothic post-punk they were offering. That style only became more entrenched in their sound on Juju. There’s not a song on here that’s not necessary. Everything builds this picture of dark gothic ambience that only Siouxsie’s vocals could embody. Her voice is so clearly ready for an album like this, and the sound that forms around her serves as a perfectly grimy base for her vocal lift. The final product is an album that was immensely ahead of its time with a sound that couldn’t be replicated for years. There’s truly nothing that has the certain luster this album does, and there’s something new you notice each time you listen. Gothic music is more than just this album, but it wouldn’t exist without it.

"Gothic music is more than just this album, but it wouldn’t exist without it." Our review of Juju by Siouxsie and the Banshees is out NOW! Check it:
