Flyer to join BEDE Network and to learn about our curriculum map tool.
Interested in adding more data science into your undergrad courses? Come to poster 124 today at #ESA2025 to learn how to join BEDE Network, engage with a community of other educators, and join our ongoing projects to create helpful tools and on the science of how we teach effectively.
That would be great! I am here until around 10 am on Thursday. Send me an email, or have her send me one and we can try to find a time. Thanks!
I work at a small liberal arts college (Denison University) and would love to meet up with other folks who do ecological research at PUIs, are curious about careers at a SLAC, or just want to chat about science research, collaboration, and education. #ESA2025
Do you teach undergrad biology or env sci majors? Whether you're already integrating data science into your courses, or want to, check our our BEDE Network poster @ #ESA2025 Wednesday evening. Learn how to join our community, get involved in a project, or level-up your DS skills. PS 36-124. Join us!
My awesome student, Biana Qiu, will lead a poster presentation on our research Monday at #ESA2025. Long-term data from Konza Prairie LTER. We use a new method to identify different classifications for populations that persist or blink in and out of disturbed systems over time. Check it out!
I'm excited to be at #ESA2025 this year! I'm an ecologist researching biodiversity change, temporal patterns, bird occurrence and migration. I teach data analytics at a small liberal arts college and am representing BEDE Network this week. Hit me up if you want to chat science and education!

Excited to meet the new cohort of SEEDS students during #ESA2025! Now more than ever remember to support programs like SEEDS! Stop by some of the related events, share them with other interested students & early career folks! Donate to SEEDS here: esa.org/giving/gener...
This does not mean the research didn't employ sound methods and many other reproducibility practices. Even without public data, the description of data and methods in a paper should be transparent enough to understand and to replicate -- and the findings should not be discredited or ignored.
In short, reproducibility is partly about data sharing, but it is also *much* more. While it is true that there are good reasons data cannot always be fully released to the public -- confidential patient health information, or individual locations of species threatened by illegal poaching.
On the same day, another article explains how Trump's new executive order for "gold standard" misuses and politicizes reproducibility to discredit scientific findings. lnkd.in/gSNWnEJb
My colleagues and I just published an article at The Conversation on the need to center reproducibility as a critical part of college education. lnkd.in/ghE8TR8v
Thank you especially to Joseph Holler, Anne Nurse, Nick Horton, Peter Kedron, and Richard Ball for a year of convos on this topic!
I'm organizing a network of Data Science at Liberal Arts Colleges (DSLAC) folks. Our next Community Call is June 12 to identify + discuss "Hot Issues" in this space.
If you're at a liberal arts college with a data science program (or developing one), send me a dm or email for an invite.

The @academicdatasci.bsky.social Leadership Summit was a great way to meet and discuss the future of university Data Science programs, from 2-year to bachelors, to grad degrees. I came home with lots of new ideas and new connections.
Any federal employees who lost their jobs need a short temp position? We have funding for ~March-May for a genomics technician in my lab in Lafayette, Louisiana -- starting as soon as possible. DM or email me for more details!
In comparison, NSF’s budget is $9
billion. The amount of fed money gone to Musk’s companies could fund the *entire next 4 years* of NSF.
But sure, let’s talk about “government efficiency”…
Please call and write to your congresspeople to emphasize the importance of NSF to basic science, education, and businesses. Here's a link to a handy document you can use to look up NSF dollars and impact in your state!
Laws passed by Congress have more legal weight than executive orders, so the NSF shouldn’t prioritize Trump’s order over its mandate to support underrepresented people in science, Scheppele said. The White House, she said in an email, is “literally asking the NSF to violate the law!”
Thank you, @kimlanelaw.bsky.social

Everyone literally runs around acting like EOs are enforceable edicts

Steve Leibman, career USDS employee, now DOGE employee, wrote an epic reply to the 5 bullet point email that you should read:
“Because of the indiscriminate firings and newly introduced culture of fear, I'm the only one left to work on my current project.”

“This is truly a national tragedy and one that is being executed by people who do not understand the value of scientific research.” 🧪 from @science.org
Acrylic painting of a roadrunner bird on a small canvas.
Creativity is the antithesis of destruction. Took an hour this week to paint something new at our local arts center with other amateur painters and felt a little better about my corner of the world. I recently visited a warmer state and met this roadrunner that lives on my friend's windowsill.
I really liked this idea of using a histogram as a legend in a choropleth map (since land isn't unemployed; people are), so I made a little guide to doing it with #rstats, {ggplot2}, and {patchwork}

Flyer about virtual graduate student flash talks hosted by the ecological forecasting initiative early career association. Talks are February 25th 2025, 1:00-2:30 PST.
Flyer about a hands on workshop for forecasting beetle abundance hosted by the ecological forecasting initiative early career association. The workshop is on March 4th, from 1-2:30 pm PST.
Do you know any students that might be interested in ecological forecasting? The @ecoforecast.bsky.social student/early career association is hosting two workshops on how to get involved. Both are targeted to early career (e.g., undergraduate) audiences, but open to all!
NOAA is in the Trump administration's crosshairs.
You know the important work they do, but may now know that It's the descendant of the Coast Survey, the nation's first scientific agency, founded in 1807 under Jefferson. I spoke with maritime historians to put NOAA's legacy in context. 🧪🦑🌎🐟
Federal funding is about so much more than money to do research. It motivates me to think deeply about how my research moves beyond sating my scientific curiosity, and how it can concretely benefit students, my local community, and the taxpaying public. Public service is motivating and fulfilling.
There are private foundations and industry avenues to fund research, but these are not going to fill the gap or be able to step in to replace lost government stability and support for scientific progress.
Applying for these grants is time consuming and challenging. Funding rates are low, but the stability and trust in government support for science has been a foundation for my career, and many others. It feels disorienting to find unstable footing and worry about the risk of broken contracts.
My current role as an ecological researcher & tenured data analytics prof has also been supported by multiple NSF grants. These have been SO impactful, not just to me, but to the students & trainees to whom they have provided funding + scientific opportunities that otherwise would not have existed.
