NIHCM Foundation Data Insights; Preterm Births and Infant Mortality Trends; The preterm birth rate in the United States has remained at 10.4% for the third year in a row, with ongoing racial and ethnic disparities and many states seeing worsening rates. Preterm births are estimated to cost ~$25 billion annually. Preterm birth and low birth weight are the second leading cause of infant mortality.
