What surprises people is how many ways we collaborate to ensure patients can access the health. Because “More Than Medicine” includes:
✨ Ability to travel to reach treatment
✨ Training that strengthens local health systems
✨ Care that supports the whole person
✨ Communities that uplift one another
This World Health Day, we’re excited to launch a series highlighting the many ways our global community shows up for people facing cancer and other critical illnesses.
Every dose of medicine is the beginning of a much larger story-a network of support and care that reaches far beyond clinic walls.
Together, we are making a difference – one patient at a time.

Moments like these remind us that patient communities are more than support networks. They become like families, bound not only by diagnosis, but by empathy that can both celebrate and grieve as one. 🫶🏾
This year, for example, our GIST patient community in India gathered while grieving the loss of two city chapter leaders. On Max Remembrance Day, they honored both Max’s legacy and the lives of these two dear friends who will always continue to offer hope and strength to others.
"Every March on Max Remembrance Day, patients and patient support groups around the world come together in solidarity.
While this day is dedicated to remembering our namesake Max, it is also about remembering one another.💙
Together, we’re not only opening programs, but also opening doors to new hope and possibilities. ❤️

As diligent follow up is essential to this program’s success, we are grateful to our partner physicians and Max Program Officer Mario Borain and Program Coordinator Geraldine Botha, for their commitment and attention to detail that make this milestone possible.
TFR refers to pausing medication under close medical supervision for people living with CML when it is clinically appropriate while supported by regular monitoring through scheduled tests. This approach can improve quality of life and reduce negative side effects from medication.
A Treatment Free Remission (TFR) program has officially launched in Zimbabwe, with the enrolment of the first two patients!
We're grateful to the physicians, patients, and partners who made this work possible and who continue to advance equitable access to cancer care around the world.

Today, more than 150 patients across 10 countries have successfully stopped treatment. That means they don't have to worry about daily medication, allowing them more time to focus on education, work, and spending time with their loved ones.
For many patients with CML, achieving treatment-free remission represents an important milestone: the possibility of safely stopping treatment. Our letter highlights that it can be achieved in resource-limited settings when patients have access to structured molecular monitoring and supportive care.
It was written in collaboration with Dr. Jerry Radich from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and partner physicians from Armenia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Kenya, and Paraguay.
We're pleased to share that the @nejm.org has published our "Letter to the Editor" on treatment-free remission for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in low- and middle-income countries!
We are humbled to walk alongside women like Margaret who are turning their scars into stars✨

"Organized by the [tag] Kenya Network of Cancer Organizations (KENCO), this initiative was the final piece of my healing. I have no job, but I have a life and purpose. My scars are no longer marks of shame or reminders of sickness—they are my medals of honor.” 🏆️
"Today, those medications are my lifeline: my left hand, once so stiff, has found its flexibility again. In October, I participated in the "Scars to Stars" event, a powerful annual initiative in Kenya designed to celebrate the resilience, beauty, and strength of cancer survivors.
"A member of my church noticed I had fallen behind on my medication. She didn't just offer sympathy; she offered a bridge. She introduced me to the program at The Nairobi Hospital that partners with The Max Foundation. Although the journey on this medication wasn't easy, I stayed the course.
“I underwent a mastectomy, a physical carving away of a part of myself. After the surgery, my left hand felt like lead—heavy, tired, and uncooperative. There were days when the financial strain of being unemployed felt almost as heavy as the disease itself.
"Suddenly, I was a 49-year-old woman facing a lethal enemy without a job and without the partner I thought would be by my side. I underwent a mastectomy, a physical carving away of a part of myself. After the surgery, my left hand felt like lead—heavy, tired, and uncooperative.
“In late 2019 while living in a town near the capital of Nairobi, I found a small, unassuming lump. Although I sought answers from a local hospital, they didn’t come until 2021 after I had moved to Nairobi. It was there that the word "cancer" shattered my world. My marriage could not withstand.
