The nightmare scenario is trump realizing he logistically and politically can’t enforce martial law nationwide, bitching about it to his base, and calling on every fascist thug with a gun to “take back our cities.”
Like even if the logistical reality of deploying the military nationwide keeps trump from declaring martial law or any of the other doomsday scenarios, he can absolutely rile up his base enough to unleash a whole bunch of Rittenhouse wannabes to make even attending a peaceful protest super dangerous
The right always talks about how “violent” protests are and labels them as riots. But in a country with more guns that people, it is honestly shocking how relatively non-violent things are even when they get out of hand.
It really does feel like we’re on the cusp of something truly awful. Someone’s going to do something stupid and it’s going to snowball. Which really seems to be the goal at this point.

I’m coming from the perspective that trump would not be able to effectuate an autocoup because the ground level enforcement he would have to rely on would not be willing to broadly suppress the population.
We read a book in undergrad that looked at six factors in six different non-violent revolutions. The only one that directly correlated with success was whether or not the military would shoot the protestors.
