In time for #EarthScienceWeek our paper published in Nature Communications today explores how mantle plumes can act as an anchor โ๏ธ and impede spreading ridge migration.
BUT if the plume weakens, it can de-anchor from the ridge and facilitate rapid ridge migration.

Very proud of Sydney Uni PhD student, Chris Alfonso, who just published his 1st paper in GSA Bulletin! ๐ This project used spatio-temporal data mining (powered by #pyGPlates + #gplately) and machine learning to help find new porphyry copper deposits.

Just in time for #EGU24 โ GPlates 2.5 has just been released, now with subduction teeth! ๐ฆท This long awaited feature means thereโs no more second-guessing your subduction polarity!

The illustrations look amazing! I just pledged on the kickstarter. Can I get a sneak peak at EGU?
We are LIVE on #Kickstarter. I repeat, we are LIVE! This is not a drill!

1st day of orientation week tomorrow. If this is anything to go by, itโs going to be one to remember!
Very nice to host @geoniette.bsky.social at EarthByte as part of our Sydney Uni ๐ค Glasgow Uni Ignition Grant on how variations in subduction angle affect volcanism and porphyry copper formation. A great start the year with lots of productive conversations and collaborations!
That would be unsyncable!
Microsoft OneDrive is the dumpster fire of file synchronisation ๐๏ธ๐ฅ Am I right?
Thanks!
Very interesting research! Do you know where I can download the CO2 curve? I can find the proxy data used to generate the CO2 curve linked in the paper, but I missed a link to the curve itself. ๐ง
A huge congratulations to Emma Chambers from DIAS, Dublin on uncovering the thermal structure of Ireland ๐ This was a huge effort incorporating many geophysical datasets to help explore for geothermal energy prospects in Ireland ๐ฎ๐ช

Bang on! ๐๐
This is a HUGE improvement to the DECRA application process. Itโs now much shorter and has some welcome tweaks to the weightings for each category.
We just need to convince the ARC to fund such a project!
In Australia, the absence of relief in the interior means that the timescales of groundwater flow can be even older ... maybe even millions of years.
And, interestingly, this means that tilting due to dynamic stresses from the mantle may influence the flow patterns.

I canโt help think of this as we approach the referendum to enshrine a Voice in the Australian constitution. If we vote no it could set us back decades. ๐จ
Woo hoo! Feels good to be flee the nest ๐ฅ and thanks @phlog-phanatic.bsky.social for the warm welcome ๐ค
