First week of teaching in Wuppertal :) I have two MA seminars, one on inclusive education & one on media in ELE, plus a BA 'intro' seminar & the MA school placement seminar.

Anyway, let's hope I'll never have to sit through another presentation on 'how does private insurance work', when I just have very specific questions on a specific product.

The worst thing is that I recognize a little bit of myself in this. The default office hour on exams, where I just replay my standard spiel on what to expect instead of trying to identify what the student in front of me already knows and wants to know....

It's not even that people are trying to use the presumed incompetence to cheat (though it is certainly advantageous for a bank to focus only on nominal rates...), it is just that they assume that the person on the other side of the desk knows nothing & didn't prepare at all.

One of the things I have learned in the last few weeks (shopping around for private medical insurance & a credit for buying an apartment) is that professional salespeople always seem to assume complete incompetence.

Hatte heute ein spannendes Gespräch mit jemandem von der Junior-Uni. Ein komplett spendenfinanziertes Bildungsprojekt hier in Wuppertal, sogar mit einem kleinen eigenem Campus :)

Es war nicht das beste, was ich je gelesen habe, aber unterhaltsam war es :)

As an aside: Ich muss meine Vorurteile gegenüber Stummfilm mal ernstlich revidieren. "The lodger" war viel 'moderner', als ich es erwartet hätte. Das war meilenweit von 'Dick und Doof' entfernt. Die Bildsprache! Der Plot(-twist)!

Einer der Nachteile an einer Übergangswohnung: Man hat nie genug Bücher. Weil eben diese Regalwände voller Backupbücher fehlen. Panische Wochenendtrips zur Buchhandlung sind die Folge.

Using Critical Discourse Analysis, this thesis demonstrates how language, visuals, and platform affordances shape power relations, ideologies, and community boundaries in online fan spaces across YouTube, Twitter/X, and Tumblr. Through three case studies, the thesis demonstrates how anti/fan activism, i.e. fan activism driven by negative affect towards a text, manifests differently depending on political alignment. Reactionary fans engage in bottom-up attempts to reshape the media industry through “anti-woke” campaigns and a fan-populist style that constructs an authentic (male) fandom in opposition to elite “corporate” producers. Progressive fans, by contrast, focus on lateral policing within fandoms, deploying social justice rhetoric to suppress content and fan behaviors they perceive as harmful. Across the Star Wars sequels and related productions, fan conflicts such as discussions about “Mary Sues”, YouTube’s right-wing media analysis essays, and Tumblr’s anti-shipping movements reveal how broader socio-political anxieties about feminism, masculinity, and diversity are projected onto media texts. Ultimately, these fan conflicts illustrate how the logics of the visibility economy amplify polarized discourse and turn fandom into a stage where ideological struggle and affect-driven participation intersect."

Die Flatrate heisst übrigens "Cineville", gilt in Wuppertal im Rex & im Cinema, aber auch in vielen anderen Kinos in NRW & darüber hinaus.

Wer wohnt keine fünf Minuten von einem arthouse Kino entfernt, das eine Kino ***Flatrate*** hat? Ich, seit neuestem.
Netflix brauche ich auf absehbare Zeit keines mehr....

Followerpower needed: Wem sollte ich auf alle Fälle folgen, wenn ich mich im Bereich participatory research vernetzen will?

Ich spiele seit ner Woche mit Notion als Arbeitsumgebung herum - nicht primär als Kollaborationstool, sondern eher als Werkzeug, um den Überblick über die verschiedenen Projekte nicht zu verlieren. Im Semesterverlauf wird sich zeigen, ob das funktioniert bzw. zumindest besser funktioniert als ohne.

Attending an interesting conference ("Fremdsprachliche Bildung für eine offene Gesellschaft", Berlin) right now. We spent most of the afternoon yesterday on a "Future Thinking" Workshop, and Friday has a walking workshop scheduled. Have never encountered these formats at a German event before.

Happy book day to me! Mein Narr Starter zum "Lernen mit, durch und für digitale Medien im Fremdsprachen-
unterricht" ist heute erschienen! Das gedruckte Buch liegt mir noch nicht vor, aber über die Uni-Bib konnte ich es schon mal herunterladen :D

Somehow, my ToDo manager had become a ToDo-RandomIdeas-NotesToSelf-CoolWebsites manager. I spent most of the day just identifying where the information currently on RememberTheMilk ACTUALLY belongs.
Next step: Turn the 'stuff' left into identifiable actionable steps.

- Babylätzchen für Juniorprofessor*innen (und Juniorprofessoren, und Juniorprofessorinnen) im Uni-Shop.
- Eine App, die einem u.a. beim Navigieren über dem Campus hilft (und die, leider leider, auch notwendig ist...)

Dinge, die für die Uni Wuppertal sprechen:

- vegane Currywurst mit Pommes als tägliches Mensa-Angebot
- vergleichsweise gut funktionierende Digitalisierung von (einigen) Verwaltungsabläufen
- kostenfreie Fernleihen (für Mitarbeitende)

Gibt es hier Personen, die momentan an der Uni Marburg lehren und Zeit für ein kurzes Gespräch hätten? #followerpower

Das beste daran, wenn man die Uni wechselt, ist übrigens, dass die ganzen schlechten Sprüche, die man sich so angewöhnt hat, plötzlich wieder für alle neu und (mildly) lustig sind.

Wenn sich das rumspricht, können die sich hier vor Bewerbenden nicht mehr retten.
