Sometimes I just love what I do, getting to write, direct, produce and edit this celebration of sinners (and the other abff honors honorees was one of those times. 🖤✊🏽https://youtu.be/1hew0rwHmFE

While it’s is clearly ridiculous for anyone to be abusive when rejected, it’s equally ridiculous for @bbcwritersroom to seemingly ignore the biases that have been at play for decades in the uk industry, that have caused such frustration and utter distrust in the fairness of these schemes 🤷🏽♂️
This looks great! More of this please @channel4tv.bsky.social 4 🖤✊🏽
For a business so cynical and exclusionary as the uk tv industry to have created a show so unbelievably beautiful as #TheAssembly is one of life’s little mysteries and does give a tiny bit of hope…maybe.
Congrats to all tonight’s production teams on their BAFTA wins. It’s been five years since black square summer & the heart felt promises the uk industry made about improving inclusion in those teams. As with every year since, tonight we continue to see the results of that determined commitment 😉
Speaking of white middle class cartels in the uk industry - Someone just told me that all but one of the @bbc’s current drama slate have been created by writers represented by just two out of the 200+ uk agencies…That can’t be true can it? CAN IT?!
After 2 decades in the U.S. I still find the lack of senior Black comm Ed’s in uk broadcasting shocking. Especially in scripted. Without representative champions (senior enough to not have to compromise their ⚫️ to stay employed) The uk Black creative sector will remain stunted.
Can’t stop thinking about #sinners and what it means for Uk Black creatives. The level of compromise that we have to engage in to appease & soothe execs in this country is so utterly destructive to our creativity, our soul & ultimately our sector. I hope we all taking note ✊🏽🖤
Only on ep one of #adolescencenetflix and it’s already one of the best British drama’s I’ve seen in a loooooog time. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Was just listening to her this afternoon!!! I was lucky enough to work on the ‘Baisden After Dark’ show, renowned for its musical performances and my all time favorite was Angie Stone’s. I still think about it. This is a real shock and a huge loss to the culture. Devastating😞
Been on a exhausted high after working #abffhonors and #naacpimageawards back to back this year. Surrounded by Black creatives, Black EP’s, Black Producers, Black execs, Black network heads etc. Such a jarring contrast to the yt middle class nepotism of the uk industry. 🤷🏽♂️
So predictable 😂
Completely missed #BAFTA2025 because I was working on two US Black awards shows, but If I know the Bafta’s, even with Cynthia and Marianne in the running, I’m betting we only took home a rising star award?
Watching Virdee on BBC, so great to see South Asian representation in contemporary drama. The brilliant Stella Nwimo producing and nice to see Mark Tonderai back from the states in the directors chair for the pilot. A pretty damn inclusive team for the uk industry.
I can absolutely confirm this and it seems there are more unhappy former & current @Bfi staff than we could ever imagine. The fact that referred to as ‘Ben’s regime’, is v. telling and goes a long way to explain the treatment of both @f_a_q and #AfricanOdyssey. 🤷🏽♂️
The more information I receive about the @bfi’s treatment of #AFRICANODYSSEY The more parallels I see to its treatment of Faisal Qureshi. So It feels less like an org proud to ‘stand by their record on supporting Black & GM filmmakers’ & more like one outraged at being challenged on it 🤷🏽♂️.
Honored to be invited to the #AfricanOdyssey meeting today. Good to see Black & Asian orgs represented. Finding out how just how badly @bfi have treated this 17 year old Black institution was shocking even for me. Kinda makes a mockery of yesterdays @bfi parliament declarations😳
If @bfi accuse me of being a disgruntled filmmaker once more, I swear! 😂😂😂 And to do so in Parliament is quite the flex 😂for the last time I’m in television not film. I just have seen how badly Ben and the @bfi have treated filmmakers of color over the last decade and want to see that improved 🤷🏽♂️
I’m not shocked by this. I keep saying it and I will say it till I’m blue in the face- Ben Roberts & the @bfi have a serious problem with race and it scares me that the government would trust them to resurrect the uk film industry under any circumstances🤷🏽♂️ t.co/8q0SKnHEn5
Yup. If they are to be believed that and many of the totally unnecessary barriers are gone ;) But we’ll wait and see. But they do seem to have a clear(er) sense of where and how they messed up. So in a sea of industry despair that feels hopeful. 🤞🏽
I’m waiting to see if the changes will be fully implemented. If so then definitely. 😊
Yes and I think if the promised changes are implemented, it has the possibility to become an incredibly important fund. 😊
Was happy to be invited to the @FilmTVCharity round table yesterday, discussing their Reel-impact fund. As a outspoken critic of the rollout of the first round, I have to say I was impressed by the new leadership & its willingness to act on our concerns & ideas for future rounds🤞🏽
The funny thing about the DEI backlash in the uk industry is that the broadcasters and film institutions implemented policies that non of us asked for & completely ignored the ones we suggested. They are simply raging against themselves again and yet still they blame us 🤷🏽♂️
It doesn’t surprise me at all that the Black MBE/OBE + industry crowd, would sell their communities out for a taste of adjacency, but what does surprise me is just how little they’ll do it for, I mean literal crumbs & table scraps 😂😂😂
Some of us have fought hard for decades to make the uk industry more inclusive. But the reality is that the new generation of execs have been trained to be exactly like previous ones. So it’s time to acknowledge that nothing’s ever gonna change here. Class, race & nepotism rule.
It’s about to become an incredibly dark and scary time for creatives and artists, especially those from marginalized groups. Buckle up and stay strong. 🖤✊🏽
