One of the highlights of Chicago's Midway was the Irish pub with take-away beer cups. You could literally sit at the gate next to the counter, enjoying a drink, and wait for last call. Time the last sip to get up and on.

Excited to share that ACTRA Toronto at TIFF, the show I created and produced picked up two noms at the Canadian Screen Awards incl. Best Non-Fiction Web Series & Best Web Series Host for Gabriella de la Torre! www.academy.ca/2026/actra-t...
Went to the Sutton Arms just a few months ago for the first time. Great pics & brought me back!
One of the great bars of the US. Makes me want to go back!
Even though it doesn't really match the other taverns, I highlighted it in one of my episodes from Chicago. Shameless plug: youtu.be/JfWMxBWmgYs
A Quick Beer returns to the home country with a visit to three of Montreal's original brewpubs! DDC, Amère à Boire & Cheval Blanc have long been favourites and opened my eyes to what local beer could be when there wasn't much on the scene in Toronto.

One of the best feelings is walking through the blustery winter into a cozy pub.
I didn't realize Blue Moon closed. Is it just a locked space now?
7/62 became Gold Rush in Madoc: www.bartowel.com/forum/viewto...
It's my alma mater so I know it well, but the U of T downtown campus has many nice places to have a sit.
The final episode of A Quick Beer shot before everything got weird. I did enjoy Cleveland greatly and it has a fun beer scene. Hope to be back there at some point!

The House beer was a highlight of the one and only time I was able to visit Allagash, in 2018 I believe. Such a great spot & if I was there I would drink it all the time!
I remember how weird it was when I wanted to check out the Windsor casino and I had to walk around basically the entire thing to find the one single door that opened inward (no signs outside telling you where to go when you're on foot), to meet the security guy welcome committee.
When I read these articles they increasingly remind me of the community meetings in Parks & Rec. But it's actually real in TO.
Does the booze industry in the U.S. ever talk about the drinking age? Seems like an instant expansion of the market would be helpful.
Great read. Rogue was one of the very few U.S. micro/craft breweries that consistently sent beer to Ontario, dealing with the red tape of the time. As such, they had a significant impact on beer drinkers of that era up here as we were able to try a number of those innovative brews.
Heading to MTL this week. Thanks for the tip on that bar. Find anything else interesting on your trip?
I'm heading to MTL for the first time since mid-COVID next week. Your pics have been inspiring for wander planning!
The generic & ubiquitous metal barstools are always a bit groan-worthy.
Visited for the first time on Monday!
Heading to London for first time in 5 years on Sunday and doing some pub research - very helpful article! Thanks Will.
New episode of A Quick Beer, exploring the tavern & bar scene of Chicago. Shot before everything got crazy & hopeful those times will return at some point. Always great memories & give it a watch if you have a moment!

Toronto being known as ‘New York run by the Swiss’ is way too generous. Toronto is significantly more uptight and impatient. In Switzerland one can drink as they please with no signs of societal collapse that Toronto frets about. Plus, folks politely put all their empties in the bin.
I thought about this very thing (not realizing cool) when I read the recent Vinepair article about Cantillon. Ontarians never got behind local beers to boost their ratings, at a time when that was a thing. Certain states definitely did which drove local pride.
I'd say that's about right. Frequent posting on BT held on til '17 then started to dive.
And people gave us shit for Toronto Beer Week.
I want some bitter hop juice!
A Quick Beer is back with an unexpected destination: Amelia Island & Fernandina Beach, Florida. Quaint & breezy spot with a solid little beer scene. Recorded previous to current political climate & hope we can all raise a glass together again soon. Give it a watch. youtu.be/YeenV_NctnM
That’s brutal. Hadn’t heard that.
Final episode drop from Windsor Essex! Fun visits to Carolinia Cider, Cured Craft, Banded Goose & The Goose. An under appreciated beer scene in Ontario. Enjoyed the trip thoroughly. Check it out: youtu.be/bQYVCPnBn0o
We’re wrapping our Quick Beer series from the delightful Windsor Essex tomorrow. Looking forward to sharing!
This is a part of why I do A Quick Beer (www.aquickbeer.com). Let's enjoy and celebrate what we've got. P.S. hoping to get to Twin Cities for an episode at some point. P.P.S. new episode dropping tomorrow.
