The Danger of Silence When Academic Freedom Is Under Threat Inaction from rank-and-file workers enabled government censorship during the Red Scares.

You ever write something and there are so many parts you hope people engage with that you can't figure out which ones to quote?

I'll do a wee thread on the 3rd, and final, essay from my Red Scares series

Folks in Texas and other places that are likely to lose power during the upcoming snowstorm: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check in with your elderly and disabled neighbors and see if you can help them prepare or make a plan if they lose power.

These folks are the first to die in extreme cold situations.

It's actually a good thing that previously apolitical normies are finally getting angry and starting to speak out. We need the numbers in the streets and at the polls.

If your response to them is "no, fuck you, too late," then you don't actually care about stopping Trump. You're just preening.

it is not better today. it is worse.

friends in federal detention for observing. friends maced and attacked. friends in car chases with ICE.

please keep your eyes open and keep listening and taking whatever action you can.

If CBC radio has watched the video why can they not describe the facts about how ICE murdered a woman? Instead they quote BOTH Trump and Kristi Noem’s description before saying the state reps “disagree” but they NEVER DESCRIBE THE FACTS. They relate Trump’s lie that she was weaponizing the car.

I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

Sexual-assault allegations against doctor spur review of cross-province licensing system Sanjeev Sirpal had his licence revoked in Quebec but was able to practise in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick

We say "Rape Culture" because we live in a culture that enables, condones and rewards abusers while dehumanizing victims.

We all know that ICE is violating human rights in the U.S.

But did you know a Canadian company is profiting off ICE? And that this same company has been ramping up its lobbying efforts?

Now, in my latest for @thetyee.ca, the government won't tell me if this is a red line for procurement:

Spotify has laid off thousands in recent years, while reportedly paying artists $0.003 per stream.

Spotify profits rose 28% in Q3. Its CEO is worth $9.8 billion. It's making money off ICE recruitment ads.

Don't you think it's time put a wrap on corporate greed and exploitation?

I agree! I also find it utterly frustrating when fans (& foe!) of AI talk about how "it's evolving so quickly" as though someone pressed a button once & it's been doing its own thing ever since.

AI is not sentient or even intelligent. Human beings are pushing the technology to do more, more, more.

Here’s my Spotify Wrapped 🎵✨

I get the appeal of using the streaming service year-end feature as a social occasion. It’s fun!

But also remember: go to the gig, buy some merch and never ever let the algorithm define your horizons of listening.

You deserve so much more.

Not trying to burst any bubbles; but Spotify is over.

They are airing ICE recruitment ads, the CEO has been investing in military/AI tech, they barely pay their artists; sometimes a percentage of a cent per stream, they promote “fake/AI artist” playlists, and there’s major concerns about data use.

Does Canada have a feminist foreign policy? Actually, we do. And we are proof it works - Equality Fund Fonds Égalité Jess TomlinCEO of the Equality Fund Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, since leading a new government formed earlier this year, has been focusing on investment, financial growth and diversifying tra...

"To disavow the label [feminist] while pursuing the substance creates a strategic inconsistency — one that weakens Canada’s credibility with partners who are doubling down on feminist approaches, including the EU, Germany, and most Nordic states."

It’s infuriating to me that I need to evaluate media to determine whether it’s AI generated now. The great “time saver” technology wastes incalculable time and energy for people who want to retain their grasp on reality
