Anyone else notice a drop in quality control on sealed perishable foods? I've had several experiences with cheese that was improperly packaged, cottage cheese/yogurt/fresh salsa that was already off when I unsealed it, etc.

Annoying.

(I check expiration dates when I shop, and my fridge is fine.)

Essay: Class on Campus Two sociologists share their findings on the modern dilemmas of cross-class relations

Not that you asked for suggestions, but this essay on cross-class friendships at Princeton, by V. Zelizer and Gaydosh, usually sparks interesting discussions among undergrads. It's a bit dated by UG standards, but its short enough to skim in a discussion section.

And many of the men are objectively much worse at their jobs, got caught in lies or screw-ups that would have led to resignation or impeachment in any other administration, and/or sexual assailants.

Republicans have been on the side of "outsider" extraction companies since before to statehood. Indeed, that's one reason why AK was initially a Dem state.

You'd think more Alaska voters would get this, but I guess it's easier to blame an American Samoan mom who ran for school board in Whittier.

All online. And it seems like the used book market is all but gone, since most textbooks are ebooks that the student just rents (at some exorbitant price or bundled with other ebooks at an equally exorbitant price).

The best thing about not teaching in fall is that I can ignore the dozens of increasingly aggressive emails the textbook procurement office sends out between now and the end of summer.

Don't get me wrong, I also ignore these messages when I *am* teaching in the fall. I just feel guilty about it.

Copilot, please explain why this person thought it was a good idea to send an email message that says "hello" to ≈3000 people?

Prego Has a Dinner-Conversation-Recording Device, Capisce? The pasta-sauce company has partnered with the nonprofit StoryCorps on a device designed to record family conversations around the table and save them for all time.

The privacy advocate in me is horrified.

The social scientist in me is all hmmmm, I wonder if Prego could randomly assign those thingies to households...

Are you sure? One of the rooms in which I teach has a thermostat that looks like it's connected to the HVAC system and even makes hopeful hissing sounds, but the temp never budges.

It's either a prop to make instructors think they have prestige, or we're unwitting subjects in a psych experiment.

I don't worry that residential higher ed will be outcompeted at *instruction* by something like the Khan TED academy. The in-person experience will hold value as it did against MOOCs.

But to be more than glorified camps, universities need to retain intellectual leadership, & about that I worry. +

"Justice involved" is used in gvt reports & academia as an umbrella term for many different statuses. Only ≈1/3 of JIPs are inmates. Majority are on probation or parole or awaiting trial.

Shedding JIP in favor of inmates is not only factually incorrect; it feeds into right-wing lies about crime.

There ought to be a name for the near-graupel, rain-like snow that destroys the magnolia blossoms in April. I nominate groawn, a homophone for groan.

$10M endowment is two full professors.

Two Marxist economists in the business school ought to do the trick.

GOP: Oh no, women are waiting until they're secure to have kids
GOP: High medical bills? Make better food choices
GOP: We support farmers

Trump: Cut WIC so millions of poor kids get just $120/yr for fruit & veg, pregnant & breastfeeding moms get $156/yr, & I get 5 more days of my military excursion

"Indeed, “[a]ll kinds of things have been said in [Metze’s] office, which have included the use of profanity.” ...

“[B]ut this was never an issue because previously the Texas Tech School of Law ... did not conceive of itself as a third-grade school yard”

Someone isn't holding back.

Good.

Also, not clear that they had any social scientists who pointed out that trust in all institutions is declining, and that some of this decline is driven by politicians and companies that have directly benefited from actively fostering distrust.

We always seem to start this hike mid-day, after leaving Homer in late morning and before jumping on a late evening flight out of ANC. Haven't had time to make it to the top. Your photos have solidified my resolve to plan better and give ourselves enough time. Thx for posting.

A Lego botanicals set.

A grad student gave me a thank-you gift and I’m truly grateful that my inability to keep indoor plants alive is widely known and accepted.

(This was a sweet gift, oc, but it was the card that got me all verklempt.)

The citizenship bit is true, though, which may explain why I've suddenly become interested in hockey, ketchup-flavored potato chips, and adding a "u" to randoum wourds.

I received my Canadian citizenship papers earlier this year so I'm qualified to tell you with the utmost confidence all the ways that lifelong Canadians and/or people who actually live in Canada don't understand their own country.

(Yes, this is about JD Vance.)

The Sage contract is major source of ASA revenue. If faced with large increase in dues or continued relationship w/ Sage, unclear how vote would go.

In past, majority of Council opposed letting editors require reproduction packages, allegedly b/c could hurt status of qual research. May be changing.

Counterpoint: I've interviewed JMCs who had strong "solo-authored" papers & letters but couldn't explain own work or analytic decisions. Likely advisor had heavy hand.

Harm is took up interview slots, possibly squeezing out candidates more capable of independent work but w/ less generous advisors.
