QGIS is free to use GIS software and a ton of tutorials can be found online...

My world is approximately the size of mars and the more work I put into it the more it becomes like an atlas.. I will admit that I have imported actual real world resources into it... mostly river systems from around the earth... but have also created demographics, roads, trade, etc...
