Shoegaze so good it reminds me I should lean Japanese. The sound the JP 2010s shoegaze scene had is still one of my favorites musically, and I feel like the emphasized vocals in this is a fun twist while still keeping those really wonderful shoegaze elements from the scene.

But yeah it's probably his most salient work so far, followed by Ideon, and I think it focusing more on a real world historical parallel is part of why. I love when a setting is defined by its history more as it progresses, because of what that can do for storytelling, and a lot of UC *is* as such.
It was rather fascinating early on just from a perspective of themes and ideas. Especially because this is one of the most "tomino take a gender studies course" gundams, even if he sometimes Gets It.
But also this is one of the horniest gundams sometimes and in ways that are really odd, because a lot of the momenta that feel like they're depicting those awkward parts of teenage sexuality wrt Uso are also mixed in with fanservice? Moments like that have lessened as the Shrike team died but
And like, I do think its use of its child cast is rather well done, the age range across the board I think is thematically relevant for the League Militaire and what they represent.
The focus on symbolism with the use of gundams as revolutionary iconography+Maria as a faith leader for reactionary cultists is also really neat! There's also the fact that I think this one has the most feasible responses to gundam-typical child soldiers in war.
Which is cool! And also like. A little weird given some of Katejina's design elements (this user recently saw the interview about her having jewish ancestry and well, with the real world history analogues, is both sensical in as many ways as it is poor optics) but she's got a fun corruption arc?
Especially with the League Militaire contrast in both age and ability, but you also notably get with Katejina, the way fascism appeals to people without power if they can become a part of the ingroup, are sold the ideology, etc. It functions by people abandoning their interests for manufactured ones
The colonialist attitude you see from Zanscare where it's about wiping out the people who live somewhere+reckless consequences of that because you want to live that pastoral life there instead is. Well. Rather on the nose but all things considered well executed.
Victory gundam is kinda wild so far because I think it has a lot of good highs but some moment to moment stuff just drives me insane.
It's interesting to divorce it from its settings' history to some degree and focus more on real world analogy what with the French name scheme+fascist Zanscare

I think the change from "original 80 chapters" to manuscript compiled by someone else is palpable, along with the change in translator prose, results in this being less interesting despite the focus on loss and abuse that permeates this chapter of the work. I miss Dai-yu, though.
