American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus)
Multiple angles of a ceramic sculpture of a griffin standing at attention, wings stretched out slightly, forming a heart shape. Its body is a warm brown with a light belly, pink-orange accents, and black tipped flight feathers. Big ole eyes stare back at the viewer. Illustrated all over its neck, wings, and back is foliage featuring the flowers and seeds of the American chestnut tree. Sculpted into its back is a candle holder with stars decorating the sides. A lit candle sits in the holder.

This sculpture is for the #UPwithART fundraiser supporting Unity Project London and Museum London in Ontario.
You can view all the work in person from April 17th-25th.

1. In a landmark ruling, the Montana Supreme Court has declared that the constitution, one of the most progressive in the nation, entirely protects transgender people.
The ruling is even insulated from SCOTUS decisions, due to how state constitutions work.

(And the shrinkage of the clay I'm using is around 13%, so, y'know... A little over 28" before firing... Pretty ambitious, but at least the eyes and such would be easier to carve!)
I do want to work my way towards eventually making an actual life-sized raven sculpture, maybe towards the end of the year if the other ones sell okay.
Adult ravens are around 25", by the way.
I meant to create 3ish palm-sized, stylized ravens sculpts... Wound up instead making two detailed ones over 10" each.
I think today was my 5th work day on them, at least the larger one is finished! Fingers crossed it fires well.
I was determined to finish this decently sized raven sculpt today... Probably has less than an hour of work left when I had to leave because the studio was closing for the night. Shucks, project creep wins yet again.

The comfort of abled people to feel like they’ve never done anything wrong is prioritized over anything else.
Very respectable selection!

Something I hope people take away from current events: If people were organizing on a level capable of accomplishing a general strike, we could end this war ourselves in two or three days.
The only way we get there is by doing the organizing. It's the only way we get out of any of this, honestly.

If you’re an American should watch the Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown ep on Iran. A deeply humanizing look at a country full of people just like you and me. I watched it after Anthony died and it moved in ways that are hard to relay. I also immediately ran out to try kabob koobideh and tahdig.
I'm thinking today about @ricksteves.bsky.social's great episode on Iran
Y'know, I did like 15 paintings in the last month and finished a bunch of ceramics and uhh... I'll be posting it soon! Sorry my feed has not had a lot of my artwork lately, I am trying to get to where have time to post it. There is a lot on my plate right now and I am struggling under the weight.

Gouache and pencil on aqua board!
I don't know what is going to happen one way or another in the coming days but today I keep having to stop and cry for the people of Iran. They don't deserve any of this and anticipating their suffering is breaking my heart.

Hey folks, if you haven't already-- I suggest stocking up on some basics and topping off your food reserves in the next few days.
If you can, be ready to help share with people in your community, too. Things are about to get a lot more expensive and caring for one another is going to be important.
One of the flaws of neoliberal ideology, seen reflected in everything from AI stance, to food choices, to drug treatment, to schooling - is the idea that we cannot, MUST NOT, intervene in people’s freedom of choices. But then morally condemning a failure to choose correctly.
On the 58th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination, it's time to reckon with the media's troubling role in the civil rights struggle. (I pitched this to @nytimes.com who found it "fascinating..[but] the news is making deeper & certainly more historical pieces very hard." But they're the news.) A 🧵
I made a little Instagram reel about this image because it’s just so frickin’ cool
A wide format painting, run through with strips of flowing patterns and colors which give it an energetic vibrance. In the lower left corner, a dog with a curly tail is drawn running or leaping upwards through the abstract patterns. Above them in the center of the artwork is written "gee, why couldn't I do that before?" on a wavy line.

An excerpt of an interview with art historian and critic David Sylvester which i think feels relevant to the environment artists find themselves in the digital/social media/algorithmic content age
