Funny that. It would be far less if the EU didn't just sit back and let it happen.

The Plot Against America How a dangerous ideology born from the libertarian movement stands ready to seize America

I was called a "conspiracy theorist" by former friends for thinking that people like Thiel and Karp were plotting a fascist takeover of America over a year ago. It's been something of journey to see the rest of the world come to the conclusion I privately arrived at, before this all started.

I would doubt that Simon doesn't know who it was.

(... and whoever it was 100% should come clean, even if it means their career.)

I made a comment last week that putting "bureau" into an e-mail address was stupid because so many people struggle to spell the word correctly.

Just learned that someone had tried 3 times to send an e-mail to the address and only succeeded on the third attempt.

I have a simple rule of thumb: government organisations who don't want their actions examined intend to engage in actions that are against the rules, or are illegal.

Lol. I've made that mistake a lot, too.

The geopolitical equivalent of wrapping an flyer for your glazing business around a brick and throwing it through someone's window.

Fair. What I really mean, I guess, is that he convinced someone he was good *any* job.

(Michael D. being the exception, in that he did something with it.)

There's that, too.

I remain astounded he was able to convince anyone he was good for the job.

A screen shot of a portion of the page describing the "Statements of Learning" for Junior Certificate Music at https://www.curriculumonline.ie/junior-cycle/junior-cycle-subjects/music/statements-of-learning/. Is say that SOL24 is that "SOL 24: The student uses technology and digital media tools to learn, communicate, work and think collaboratively and creatively in a responsible and ethical manner. " and identifies as an example of learning that "Students can use technological and digital media to create collaborative compositions; record and critique group performances and explore the works of composers, while being aware of issues related to copyright and plagiarism."

I have highlighted the "... while being aware of issues related to copyright and plagiarism".

A screenshot of the page describing the "Expectations for Students" for JC Music at https://www.curriculumonline.ie/junior-cycle/junior-cycle-subjects/music/expectations-for-students/, where Strand 3 "Culture and context" has the following regarding what students should be able to do:

"3.6: associate music excerpts to a variety of texts (words, film, language) and justify the reasons as to why this piece of music was chosen to match the text

3.7: compare compositions by two or more Irish composers or songwriters; use listening, background reading, and scores (where appropriate) to explain and describe differences and similarities in the compositions

3.8: select a particular advertisement and analyse the role music plays in supporting the message and promoting the product

3.9: investigate the influence of processing effects (e.g. distortion, reverb, panning) on the recording process; select some recordings and evaluate the use and effectiveness of such effects within them

3.10: discuss the principles of music property rights and explain how this can impact on the sharing and publishing of music

3.11: explore the time allocated to Irish artists and performers on a variety of local or national Irish media and present these findings to their class"

My research, of course, was going to have to include whether #copyright was still not mentioned in the curriculum, as it clearly has no business being there, and to my irritation, but not necessarily shock, there it was.

Still no mention of the #PublicDomain, though.

Some years later, my younger daughter starts in a different secondary school, so I decided to look into the matter again, with a view to pre-empting her being taught about #copright (that effectively, she'll never amount to anything because she's probably going to commit an offence beforehand).

As part of my preparation, I looked up the curriculum for JC Music on the Dept. of Ed. web site, and there was no mention of #copyright.

At all.

I attempted to bring this up with the Principal and the Board of Management, but they weren't interested.

It was all about file-sharing, sampling, and the dangers of getting involved in all of that (I think I remember they even used the old '80s trope of "piracy funds terrorism"). Prison sentences. Internet bans. "Just say no.", etc.

A curriculum *obviously* written by the entertainment industry.

I attempted to challenge my elder daughter's secondary school when I noticed that in Junior Cert Music there were about 2 hours put aside for #copyright (with no mention at all in the notes about, say, the #PublicDomain, or #CreativeCommons, or how creative kids can *benefit* from copyright).

This is the core problem: we elect leaders to think hard about how society should work and to enact laws to put it into effect. When they do things like this, they show us they have no problems causing unnecessary, vindictive harm and wasting their time on laws that were never going to work.

Like ... there's an opportunity for the three of them to sit down and work out a platform for the changes people their age want to see. Mind you, I don't know if the world really needs a new platform from a group of white, middle-class, christian-presenting, english-speaking men.
