Looking forward to reading this.

It sounds like you know more about anarchism than I do. As I understand Shalizi and anarchism, if the federations are engaged in direct deliberative democracy then the problems he raises will arise. Unless the federations are very small.
He doesn't explicitly mention anarchism, but if you've read about it you'll see the relevance. @kevinzollman.com @karlwiderquist.bsky.social @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social @etvpod.bsky.social @lastpositivist.bsky.social @seanmcarroll.bsky.social
I've been reading about anarchism lately, mostly the socialist, not anarcho-capitalist, one. Their critique of authority resonates but their proposals for what to do instead, not so much. This short piece by Cosma Shalizi explains some of the problems bactra.org/notebooks/de...
@lastpositivist.bsky.social I’ve been in London for a few days and have been shocked by how sunny it has been. I’m not complaining but just wondering where all that London fog/rain I’ve heard about is.
I’m afraid to ask how M. thinks those two distributions are related.
I heard the epi but will look for the article.
Yeah, I remember this from reading debates about skepticism.
That’s what it sounded like. All there are are different perspectives and we can’t get beyond perspectives to any reality. So we should get rid of the idea that there’s a reality out there. That seemed to be the position. Again to me that is astounding.
among philosophers? It strikes me as an astounding claim. @kevinzollman.com @etvpod.bsky.social
I just watched part of a video where Hilary Lawson says we’re seeing the end of the West in geopolitics but later he says we don’t have knowledge. Isn’t the first thing he said a claim to know that we’re seeing the end of the West? I’m confused. How popular is this idea that we don’t know anything
environmental impact? @etvpod.bsky.social @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social
I’ve been wondering about the environmental impact of LLM prompting versus looking through Tik Tok, Instagram, streaming services, etc. My understanding is that AI powers all of them, but LLMs seem to be receiving more criticism. Anyone know of a source which compares these in terms of
I was just about to start a book called We The Elites: How The US Constitution Serves the Few. But perhaps I should just put it aside; maybe history is societal introspection and we should just look forward.
That's why I'm interested in more lefty takes. Any leads would be appreciated.

argument for the view that although we should have broad free speech rights, speech can be harmful enough that that right should be constrained in various ways? I'm pretty familiar with liberal takes on this issue (like Mill, although I think he later became socialist-ish).
One for the philosophers on here. Considering only those on the left (progressives, socialists, anarchists, etc.), which philosopher(s) gives the best argument for the view that one should be a free speech absolutist (or nearly one) and which one(s) gives the best
We have one of those here too 😊:

Democracy could definitely use some help. Maybe lottocracy is the answer:

People are really likening him to Stalin?! Disagreeing with his vision for NYC is one thing. But Stalin-wow!
I know this wasn’t the point of your post, but I can’t believe you yougins know The American President. 😊 That was one of the best lines in the movie, along with the one in the limo about the Pres girlfriend protesting against apartheid.
I’m absolutely certain I can’t. Maybe, though, I’m just not well read enough. 😊
I liked this episode, although I might make some people mad:

Thanks from us social scientists who’re trying to be philosophically informed.
If I end up doing that, we’ll talk. Hope you’re as well as one can be these days.
Dreams is one of my favorite movies. My Japanese in-laws tell me it’s because I’m honorary Japanese. 😊
Yeah, I’ve heard about that approach.
Very helpful!
Yeah, I've thought about oral exams too, but they are tougher with larger classes.
