The marches had no shortage of skeptics. In Oxford, Miss,, Cass Rutledge, a first-year law student at the University of Mississippi, walked through the No Kings protest and around the town square on Saturday and questioned why people thought Mr. Trump was acting like a king. "He is, you know, a duly elected president who won the popular vote and the electoral college in a landslide," Mr. Rutledge said. "And so I'm a little bit confused on how he's acting differently than any other president." He pointed to the stalemate in Congress over the SAVE America Act, the Republican-driven bill to tighten voter identification and registration rules, which Democrats have called an attempt to suppress turnout based on false claims of voting fraud. Mr. Rutledge said that Mr. Trump was "going through the process" to try to get the legislation passed.

The NYT says today’s #NoKings protests had “no shortage of skeptics,” and then quoted exactly one of those skeptics: The chairman of the Ole Miss College Republicans (as of 2025.)
But of course, the Times doesn’t ID him as such. He’s just a Concerned Youth.
“The federation” is in the sense siskos (and other characters’) choices on which values they will emphasize in any given conflict. “It’s easy to be a saint in paradise” is a line dropped extremely early in ds9, Sisko frustrated w his earth bosses.
I’d probably enjoy that kinda show. To me the federation is the idea that we can build a better society. Ds9 is great because it shows someone “from the fed” in a non fed government, and we get to see the ideals tested.
It has it both ways: internal politics, but w/o making the core symbol material
you’d like ds9
Here’s two characters not in the federation discussing it
It’s the best acted and written Star Trek and has the most interesting things to say about “what is a utopia”
youtu.be/6VhSm6G7cVk?...
Yeah I mean it’s a tv show not a political treatise!
their goal is to tell stories and so the federation is gonna change based on the story. So critiquing “the federation” as if it’s Plato’s republic is in a sense illegible.
I think it’s okay that people have different visions of utopia.
…have you seen ds9?
I mean yeah the big bad are the borg and the dominion, both autocratic, one monolithic, one pluralistic, both led by pseudo-hive-minds but capable of technological advancement. The dominion ofc being the most effective “dark federation” because for most people in it, it’s kinda a “normal” state.
Right-NIMBYism is the generally correct belief that you can keep your city exclusive by blocking new housing.
Left-NIMBYism is the mistaken idea that you can keep your city affordable and attainable by blocking new housing.
This should be an impeachable offense. I understand that we’re way past any of that, but that shouldn’t stop us from naming it.
It's just unreal how little thought or planning went into starting a new massive war in the Middle East.
Another post from my grandma, this one a fictional piece (which is very rare from all I have of her). It was written in 1979, I think. She got an A- and praise for her "effective use of narrative".
I think ppl online attacking Biss as the “AIPAC candidate” (they spent 5 mil to beat him) is gross but the org legitimately shifted their strategy in a way that dramatically increased their visibility
this is also the story Pritzker has been telling abt why he distances himself from AIPAC now
they changed their policy re funding campaigns around 2022 when they launched their PAC and Super PAC
They’ve largely targeted progressive democrats

i think polling self-identified yimbys on 'would you rather invest in robo cars or public transit' would see transit prioritized, but they are often coded as conservative for supporting self-driving cars *at all*
there are a number of issues like that that then seem to negatively polarize ppl
fascist algo is frying ur feed most of the yimbys im seeing are still normal, but x tries to put conservative stuff in front of us
and besides that, the movement just is big enough now to have ideological fraying/diversity
the irl presence is still pretty focused on the mission
For the same $6 trillion cost, you could crush child poverty with a child allowance and free childcare, fix unemployment insurance, do paid family, sick & medical leave, massively boost ACA subsidies, and eliminate child uninsurance with Medicare for Kids.
