The paper? A foundational Python toolkit for macromolecular structure analysis. It currently stands at 26880+ citations – more than what 99% of scholars reach during their career. The paper was _indeed_ acknowledged, sure. But where is the fine line between intellectual debt and formal credit?
Here is an example. Let's take Adams et al.'s seminal paper from 2010.
In a sample corpus, we found that 4 papers cite it. However, 594 papers were semantically almost identical to Adams et al. (2010) and never cited it.
So what's a shadow citation?
Suppose we have a bunch of papers. A shadow citation is then a pair of papers where:
→ Paper B could have cited Paper A (it came later)
→ they're semantically nearly identical by embedding
→ BUT the citation never happened
What happens when two papers are semantically nearly identical yet one never cites the other?
I am currently mapping across 5 fields. The result is what I call a "shadow citation network."

Funny thing – I have another paper on cancel culture at a random Hungarian publisher which was accepted back in 2022, never saw the day of light. 3 years passed haha.
For those criticizing academic knowledge production – incl. me – it is important to remember that there are two sides of the coin.

The manuscript shows great promise and covers an important topic.
However, before it can be accepted, the authors are kindly invited to include and implement the following 20 completely irrelevant papers by a magically gifted author who is, of course, absolutely not me.
I was kind of worried about the second round being slow for this paper I submitted in September. Turns out the reviewers still have a little time to reflect. Anyway, only 522 years to go now.
