I think it's actually essential to children's moral development to be exposed to short stories moderately beyond their reading level where a bunch of fucked up shit happens and then instead of offering a moral lesson or any sort of emotional or narrative resolution it just ends.

There was a brief period of time where he could contain his excitement for long enough to get close without the cats bolting, but right now they want nothing to do with him.

A fun new development in our home is that any time the baby sees one of the cats (usually Arlo), he flips out and starts screeching at the top of his lungs from excitement, and I can’t even be mad about it because that’s also what I want to do every time I see a cat.
