TotalEnergies ends US offshore wind projects TotalEnergies (LSE:TTE) has signed settlement agreements with the US Department of the Interior to relinquish its Carolina Long Bay lease and its New York Bight lease, both awarded in 2022. As a result, the company will no longer develop offshore wind projects in the US. Under the terms of the settlement, TotalEnergies will recover the lease fees paid and will invest an equal amount in the development of US Gas & Power production and exports. TotalEnergies’ studies on these leases have shown that offshore wind development in the US, unlike those in Europe, are costly and may have negative impacts on power affordability for US consumers. The company says since other technologies are available to meet growing electricity demand in the US in an affordable way, it considers there is no need to allocate capital to this technology in the US. CEO Patrick Pouyanné says the company is reinvesting funds to finance the construction of the 29 million tonnes Mt Rio Grande liquified natural gas (LNG) plant and the development of its oil and gas activities. “These investments will contribute to supplying Europe with much-needed LNG from the US and provide gas for US data centre development,” Pouyanné says. The company has also signed a letter of intent with Glenfarne for the long-term offtake of two million tonnes per year of LNG over 20 years, subject to the project’s final investment decision. TotalEnergies is deploying its integrated energy model across the US, where it has been active since 1957.
