After several days on a troop train we arrived in Hattiesburg, Mississippi-Camp Shelby. I was first assigned to a Combat Engineering outfit in the 31st Dixie Division, however, in a few days I was transferred to the 85th Infantry Division, to the Reconnaissance Troop.

Within two or three days, orders were posted, showing who was going where and when — and I was on my way to Camp Shelby in Mississippi; a relatively good thing I thought, at least the winter there wouldn't be cold.
