My main research areas—movies, pop culture, contemporary art, youth ministry—aren't generally taken very seriously in academia either. I've had an underdog mentality for years, like I have to really earn my place in academic circles. So, receiving this award feels pretty validating and affirming.
I've had imposter syndrome and felt out of place in academia since starting my PhD. I graduated from a tiny now-closed Bible college and a small-but-scrappy seminary. No Ivy Leagues, no big grants or awards, no multiple master's—I was/am a Converse-wearing youth pastor who likes movies and theology.

Apart from the Blizek Professor of Religion and Film at U. of Nebraska Omaha, I don't know of any academic position quite like this one that has appointments in Theology/Religion and Cinema/Film Studies depts. I'm grateful to my university for an openness to innovation and interdisciplinary work.

So, here's my new title: Associate Professor of Christian Ministries, Theology and Cinematic Arts
Starting next academic year, 50% of my teaching will be in the Cinematic Arts department at George Fox University. The other 50% will remain in Theology, plus I'll continue to be a Faculty Fellow in the Honors program.
