Australia and Chile could shift over 50% of the new solar generation they added in 2025
with new battery capacity
Large-scale solar shifting is emerging first in markets where solar already dominates the
generation mix. Markets like California, Australia and Chile are leading the way.
Among these markets, Australia and Chile stand out for adding relatively small amounts of
battery capacity in absolute terms, 9 GWh and 4 GWh respectively, but large enough relative to
their solar growth to make a material difference. Chile added enough battery capacity in 2025
to theoretically shift 76% of the new solar generation it added in that year, while Australia added
enough to shift 53%.
I did not know this - Australia added enough battery capacity to shift *more than half* of its solar generation

I said it before, but Indian chillies will come over to borrow salt, get chatting, stay for dinner and then hold you up at gunpoint after dessert, mexican chillies will smash your door down, grab you by the collar and haul you outside for a solid beating

This was a brief pop-in but I did mention @ember-energy.org's new report showing demand for gas is seeing weakening growth particularly in Asia - Australia's main customer
We want a managed transition, not a chaotic painful one. Tax helps achieve that!

Panel from FDOTM cartoon "Won’t somebody save these hundreds of turtles condemned to death?", with nice drawings of two kinds of turtles, with very long necks.
Even more perversley the NSW government has hired a bunch of wetlands scientists to rescue the remaining turtles and take them to the zoo."

Electric car sales soar 51% in mainland Europe as Iran war drives up fuel prices
Data shows 224,000 new EVs were registered in March, with Norway leading way in terms of switching
"As Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised Europe’s “windmills” and push towards greater use of renewable energy, the figures suggest the US-Israel war on Iran is accelerating the move away from combustion engines"

This is a joke, right? I spent a good year doing EV stories with The Guardian. Nine in ten cars in Norway are EVs. It's 2026 and we're being treated to stories that read like it's 2019 in a fossil fuel crisis. There is no mention of climate change. The reporter is impatient. That's all we get.
