If you’re going to suggest the idea that arguing in favour of one specific design approach over another is contemptible, then it would make your stance a lot more convincing if you didn’t also do the exact same when it suits *your* values.
Overconfidence in an underdeveloped position is insanely common when you wanna try to be introspective about your relationship with art. To act like you’re infallible and it’s just exclusive to that hypothetical type of guy you’re mad at is obnoxious as fuck and many people do!
Games discourse might be worthwhile to partake in if everyone just got the fuck over themselves instead of projecting their insecurity onto anyone voicing dislike, even strongly, of their personal taste. Especially if they happen to be comfortably mainstream in regard to viability and acceptance.
Even if the ways you substantiated your position were nearly identical and in the exact same cordial tone but the subject of critique now contends with design principles that others find value in, it’s fair to treat it as in group out group shit.
All these examples of you declaratively stating detractive opinions on works you don’t like but the second you identify the similarities between those works and criticise ideas holistically by leveraging examples to demonstrate your points, you’re now imposing your narrow taste.
Labelling people as pretentious snobs because the framework they use, that you’re okay with in isolated examples, resulted in some intense critique of an overarching design trend across games you happen to like is so fucking stupid.
Developing your ability to articulate what you value in art will also naturally lead to critically assessing what you don’t value and why, a process anyone who’s ever bothered to thoughtfully engage with this stuff will go through at some point.
There’s a certain type of discourse that keeps cropping up on these sites as pushback to what is ultimately a niche group of people who strongly advocate for what they value in arcade game design and it’s always so insufferably hypocritical for how aggressive it is
