Do you teach/research gender/sexuality w/ German sources? Have you had access issues or needed to translate sources yourself bc English versions don’t exist? Fill in this survey (by 2/15) to identify core texts for an anthology of translations in scientific & literary sexology between 1890 & 1930.

Nothing will come in the way of tetka theory. After all, tenacity is part of tetka style. The book is now drafted. It contains lots of tetka wisdoms others want to suppress. It endured much and so it will also endure the long way to publication. Biće, biće!

UBC FACULTY! Interested in advocating, gathering, commiserating, learning about the university's poor financial condition? I don't know what we'll do yet, but I would like to see who might be interested. DM me.
Important news: the deadline for the joint BAMS/MSA conference in Loughborough has been extended to December 29, 2025! You can review the CFP, and find links to the submission platform, here. www.moderniststudies.org/conference/M...
A lovely tribute to Alice Wong by @thrasherxy.bsky.social. "She did not gatekeep knowledge; she shared it with the generosity and glee of a neighbor passing out full-sized candy bars on Halloween." I laughed at the part where she told him to “EAT THE FUCKING COOKIES!!!!” So very Alice.
I'm glad @ubyssey.ca has some reporting on this. Unfortunately, the article repeats a lot of the university's budgetary euphemisms. Units in the Faculty of Arts are being crushed by devastating budget cuts (called "savings targets" by the administration). Cuts affect student services and jobs.
UBC CENES, FHIS, and Asian Studies are excited to collaborate on a careers workshop for our students! Check out our event "From Classroom to Career: Speaking Success with Language Learning". More details in the link below.

Call for Papers: Rethinking Weimar Cinema (University of Oxford, 17 - 19 June 2026) Keynote Speakers: Dr Paul Dobryden (University of Virginia) Dr Sara F. Hall (University of Illinois Chicago) Dr Qinna Shen (Bryn Mawr College) Film Screenings: TBC, in collaboration with the Ultimate Picture Palace and Weimar 100 Organizers: Dr Lawrence Alexander (Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford) and Dr Molly Harrabin (University of St. Andrews/University of Warwick). Deadline for submitting proposals: 31 October 2025
The centennial years of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) have seen a rise in academic engagement with and public interest in this period of German film history. As one of the most dynamic and experimental periods in global cinema, Weimar film has long been recognized for its aesthetic innovations, sociopolitical commentary, and influence on subsequent film movements. Yet these anniversary commemorations have not only reaffirmed the significance of this era, they have also opened the door for new questions, perspectives, and critical paradigms. This conference seeks to build on this momentum by revisiting Weimar cinema through fresh critical lenses and innovative methodologies, inviting participants to reconsider its cultural, political, and aesthetic significance in light of new archival discoveries, theoretical frameworks, and interdisciplinary approaches. The conference will take stock of our current understanding of Weimar film to map where this field may be heading as well as offering new genealogies of those images, figures, and texts that have defined it thus far.
In addition to traditional conference papers, we welcome contributions from archivists, practice-based researchers, and works of videographic criticism. Please submit proposals of up to 300 words to lawrence.alexander@rsa.ox.ac.uk and mlh21@st-andrews.ac.uk by 31st October 2025. Notices of acceptance will be sent out in December. A limited number of bursaries are available to contribute to travel and accommodation costs for postgraduate and early-career speakers. This event is hosted by the Weimar Film Network and funded by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) as part of a three-year Promoting German Studies networking grant awarded to the German Screen Studies Network, co-directed by Dr Paul Flaig and Dr Dora Osborne.

It's nice but a caveat: I am scared of heights and avoid looking out the window whenever possible lol
😁
Picture of office with two desks, one covered with piles of books and a bookshelf in the background.
UBC peoples: if anyone is interested in free books, DM me and we can arrange a time for you to browse. Because of space issues I have to downsize my office library. Primarily 18th-21st century literature, philosophy, literary history/theory. Much of it in German but also in English and French.
Great discussion with fab colleagues @ces.ubc.ca and a chance to promote my book @uoftpress.bsky.social! Thanks again @jonahgarde.bsky.social and @ervinmalakaj.bsky.social
