Why do Public Debates Escalate? Trigger Points and the Moral Dynamics of “Hot Politics” Escalating, emotionally charged, and moralized forms of controversy are a central feature of contemporary politics. Our study develops a framework for understanding how political debates between ordi...

Knife crime! Pronouns! Meat bans! Some political issues lead to "hotter", more emotional and polarizing debates than others. We show how these "trigger points" reveal a contested structure of moral expectations and how they get weaponized by polarization entrepreneurs. OA @bjsociology.bsky.social 🧵

My biggest takeaway from all of this is how he can walk around in a gilet-shirt combo, like an extra from Succession and claim to be, in any way, anti-elite, or of the people... bizarre!

yeah and I suspect he thinks that, combined with not getting jobs - and his annoyance at not being made Chelsea caretaker on Maresca being sacked - is a result of woke culture gone mad, which has made him yesterday's man (he only ever talks about the past, his former greatness etc).

I've suspected for a while an outward rightward turn was imminent... Seems very, very bitter about not getting any managerial appointments (and no ability to reflect on why not...). Obviously much worse player, but Barton's overt right-wing turn work through feeling ignored/overlooked... unloved?!

My kind of research! That said, I have not been to a pub in 5 years now because of infection risk and also that kidney failure means I cannot drink a whole pint of any fluid.

But the pub as a space, and place for conversation. Nothing beats it in my mind.

We visited pubs across the country, from the desi pubs of the West Midlands to a Rochdale Wetherspoons with pitstops at rural pubs and many more.

It includes a family story taking us from my Great-Granddad's pub in Tanzania to my Dad's pub in Southall and back to the Midlands via the Punjab.

Pubs for the People by me & Vallu is out with @manchesterup.bsky.social in October. On how the pub can be salvaged as a space for the Good Life that goes beyond boring ideas of White England.

A bargain at £18.99 in hardback (cant even get 3 pints for that!)
