That said, I take the train because I hate driving so much that I've never owned a car. It's easier for me to go car free than for most people - it's just me and I'm reasonably able-bodied, so I can pay the higher rent to live in a small apartment in a walkable area

We should definitely make train travel more frequent and less expensive. That does seem high - I go round trip Seattle to Portland several times a year, often for less than that. My last RT would have been about $65 if I hadn't brought my cat

Lol. LMAO. Tell that to my hot flashes, insomnia, brain fog and utter lack of fucks to give

Fortunately, my doctor doesn't hold the same opinion as yours, or I'd have had to find a new one

I know. It's also a way to control women and reduce their options while they're still young.

Somehow I'm always caught off guard when the "truth never changes" people completely change their messaging. The double speak and hypocrisy really shouldn't surprise me anymore, but ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

I am so bewildered

Like these are the same genre of people who ran the church youth groups I attended in the 90s, when they insisted that teen pregnancy was incredibly shameful and that teenagers who have sex (or even think about it) are dirty and sinful. They also vote against any kind of support for teen moms.

"teen births have crashed" as if that's a bad thing ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Haha, yep, it's true. And not just in the actual South - I grew up in CT and WA, mostly, in very anti-catholic evangelical/fundamentalist churches. I suspect the denominations I grew up in have roots in the Southern Baptist movement, but for some reason I've never looked into it

Yeah, of course! You're probably going to want to add some ice cream, too, if you've got it on hand. For, uh, the ice cream food group?

This response brought to you by the ben & jerry's in my freezer

Dammit, what!? Did they post this a couple weeks late?

Yikes ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Where is that mess?

So he thinks this war on Iran is a "just" war?! The war the president started with no provocation and without constitutionally-mandated authorization from Congress? The war that opened with double-bombing an elementary school full of little girls? *That's* "just" war?

I hate these people so much

Thank you for YOUR time! I love your threads about Catholicism - I always learn so much

Lots of right-wing protestants are also immigrants, particularly among pentecostals and charismatics, but the baptists have a decent share, too. I suspect the difference is that without a central authority structure like Catholics have, they tend to be entirely separate congregations that don't mix

I wonder how long before the right-wing protestants start their campaign to replace the Catholic justices with evangelicals. Hell, it's probably already under way, even though it would take decades - they play the long game.

I grew up evangelical/fundamentalist; most never stopped insisting that Catholics aren't really Christian. When I was a teenager, our pastor made it very clear that he was happy to join the Catholics and the Mormons to "march for life", but he wasn't going to join them for a prayer meeting

Claire Willet, Catholicism explainer extraordinaire, explains the Pentagon vs Pope drama - absolutely worth reading. Even if you DGAF about the situation, she's hilarious, so read it for the humor

Holy shit, that is incredibly grim. Nobody deserves to be treated like this

"Instead of tackling inflation or healthcare, they are targeting millions like me who want nothing more than to live our lives freely and equally."

This is so bad - what does she think trans people want? Could her efforts to make their lives harder have gone toward improving healthcare instead?

The tracks for both systems are the same standard gauge (according to Wikipedia anyway) but I think there's more to it than that - like the substrate or whatever under the tracks matters, too? And I think the train cars are set up for different station/platform lengths. But I'm mostly guessing

I don't think so, but honestly I don't know.

Seeing the maps at scale like this finally lead to the disappointing realization that ST isn't actually trying to build Chicago's L; what they're aiming for looks a lot more like Chicagoland's Metra.
