Child poverty isn't just bad, it results in an enduring earnings gap.

The pay gap between graduates who grew up in poverty and those who didn't persists even between when they go to the same university, get the same degree and work for the same firm ⤵️

Ahead of her question on asylum policies and child poverty, Baroness Lister has written a piece for @politicshome.bsky.social criticising the Govt's reduction in the duration of refugee leave www.politicshome.com/opinion/arti...

Lord German mentioned a 1m figure for those affected. Do you know where that's from? Is that for the temporary protection status?

A pretty forensic taking apart of the Government’s reduction in refugee protection by Baroness Lister in the House of Lords. Now being followed by Baroness Teather, a former UK director of the Jesuit Refugee Service (and chair of APPG on refugees when an MP) parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/...

Three of UK's biggest children's charities demand U-turn on migration crackdown Coram, Barnardo’s and the Children’s Society have written to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood urging her to rethink plans to change indefinite leave to remain (ILR) rules retrospectively

Good to see this from children's charities among many others: earned settlement reforms likely to have especially negative impact on children and families on low income including by punishing families for accessing much needed benefits www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

We’re deeply concerned that proposed changes to settlement rules could put more children at risk of poverty & instability.

We’re urging the Government to stay true to their efforts to reduce child poverty & ensure children’s wellbeing is at the heart of policy

Today the two-child limit is gone. Parents have told us what this will mean for their kids:

- A first-ever birthday party for a 10-year-old
- Better quality food
- Clothes that aren't completely worn out
- Going on the school trip without getting into debt
- A new mattress
- Swimming lessons

Labour moves to water down immigration reforms after MP b... The PM is poised to make a U-turn on proposed changes that would make it harder for migrants to acquire permanent residency

Observer reports govt shift

Like almost all media outlets, it mistakenly reports Home Sec proposed to double settlement to 10 years "in most cases"

Necessity of policy retreat much clearer once simply state govt had proposed to triple wait to 15 years in *most* cases

Changes to settlement: what do they mean? - Migration Observatory In November 2025, the government announced changes making it harder to obtain settlement in the UK (ILR). This commentary examines the changes and their potential impact.

"In most cases, from 5 years to 10 years" was just said on BBC Westminster Hour too about settlement reforms

As a factual statement, this is incorrect: more people who arrived from 2021-24 will face a 15 years wait than have a 10 year wait.

There is a big convergence on 5-6 years almost everywhere. Sometimes 3-8. Switzerland is more sceptical so went with 10 years: tougher than any other democracy

I think No 10 understand necessity of significant compromises - esp on transitional cohort. But it would be disappointing if there weren't at least 2-3 ministerial resignations *if* the tripling, quadrupling (and quint/sextupling) of settlement to 15-20-25-30 years really was railroaded through.
