VJ Edgecombe's first NBA season would give him a great chance to win Rookie of the Year in many seasons.
Edgecombe is expected to be a distant third place this year behind Kon Knueppel and Cooper Flagg, but the Sixers' 20-year-old guard is officially a finalist: www.phillyvoice.com/sixers-guard...
VJ Edgecombe is officially a finalist for the 2025-26 NBA Rookie of the Year Award. The Sixers' 20-year-old joins Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks and Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets in the top three.
Everybody knew the talent gap between the Sixers and Celtics is significant. In Game 1 today, the Sixers showed just how far behind Boston they are when it comes to execution and preparation.
Inside: a lot of takeaways from me after an irredeemable loss: www.phillyvoice.com/sixers-celti...
Sixers went back to a nine-man rotation today, that brought Justin Edwards back into the fold. Nothing they did or attempted to do worked. A brutal loss to begin the series – and the game ends with Celtics fans mockingly chanting "WE WANT BOSTON." Story on a horrid loss to come.
Nick Nurse has called it. Current lineup: Grimes, Oubre Jr., Edwards, Watford, Bona.
It is now a 30-point game with 9:16 left. Timeout Nick Nurse.
More unforced errors from the Sixers derailed any chance of a third-quarter comeback in Game 1 in Boston:
After three: Sixers 71, Celtics 95.
Sixers had a decent start to the second half, but more self-inflicted wounds did them in. They trimmed a 23-point lead to 15, now it is up to 24 entering the final frame.
Sixers are 26-68 (38.2%) from the field and 3-20 from three-point range.
There goes that. After the Sixers got the lead down to 15 points...
- Kelly Oubre Jr. wide open missed three
- Andre Drummond backcourt turnover
- Jaylen Brown three
- Paul George 21-footer missed
- Nikola Vučević three
Timeout Nick Nurse.
Sixers finally look competitive here in the third quarter. Boston's lead, once as high as 23 points, is now down to 15.
Kelly Oubre Jr. is now 0-5 on threes; almost all of them have been completely open.
Drummond is starting the second half for the Sixers.
Halftime: Sixers 46, Celtics 64.
Sixers' offensive process left a lot to be desired. They shot just 16-48 from the field, 2-16 from three-point range and 12-17 on free throws.
Nothing has come easy. It has been particularly challenging for Tyrese Maxey, 5-14 from the field.
Adem Bona trips Jayson Tatum for his third foul of the first half. Has been a really, really tough playoff debut for him.
Sixers' offensive process so far has been brutal, lacking any creativity. Just screening to create one-on-one plays, but oftentimes without actually creating particularly favorable matchups. Ball isn't moving and neither are the Sixers, shooting 29.3 percent from the field and 2-13 on threes.
Andre Drummond, with the Sixers down by 19 points early in the second quarter, picks up a technical foul during an offensive possession. Lead is now 20. Adem Bona, already at the scorer's table, now in.
The backboard camera ESPN used during the first Paul George free throw was mirrored so it looked like he shot left-handed. Not sure I have seen that before.
After one: Sixers 18, Celtics 33.
The Sixers did quite literally nothing well and got dominated by a much better team. Tyrese Maxey shot 3-9 in that opening frame and was not getting good looks. Sixers are 6-21 from the field, 1-9 from three and look out of sorts execution-wise.
Hell of a poster dunk from Kelly Oubre Jr. on Nikola Vučević there. Sixers could really use a strong close to this quarter.
