This comes as Australia surpasses the milestone of 51 per cent renewable electricity in the National Electricity Market for the first time.
Renewables are the cheapest form of energy.

The Senate Inquiry into Climate Disinformation is on again today (& tomorrow) - starting at 9am with META.
Disinformation is at the heart of many of the issues we face so this inquiry is worth catching. Watch here - & full schedule below #auspol > www.youtube.com/live/Vwuqxfy...
In case you missed it: on Friday, the Albanese Government approved the expansion and extension of Queensland’s Middlemount Coal Mine, which will lock in millions of tonnes of additional climate pollution and intensify heatwaves, bushfires, floods and cyclones.

With a mixed-results at COP30 - i.e. good intentions but no concrete plans for the “transition away from fossil fuels” - don’t give up.
Let’s remember the progress made since the Paris Agreement and the options ahead of us. That’s the message of the image below
An image branded by Hancock Iron Ore that says "Powering Al - Powering Australia Al requires vast amounts of reliable electricity to operate It cannot function on intermittent energy sources like solar and wind Without sufficient dependable electricity, Australia's Al development will suffer, productivity will decline, international competitiveness will weaken, and national revenue will be negatively impacted Reliable power isn't just essential for Al, it's essential for Australia's future."
Found AI's number one Australian fan. This is real. I'm not going to explain how I came by it. @ketanjoshi.co and @timinclimate.bsky.social will love* it.
In case you missed this it, we published our in-depth summary of COP30 yesterday
a drawing of a boat heating torwads an iceberg - lower temps still collide with ice but not as badly.
This, by @giacgrassi.bsky.social, remains one of the simplest and best climate visuals
"Bad COP" | My new commentary on #COP30:
michaelmann.net/bad-cop/
COP30 TEXT ANALYSIS: One way to read dense COP text is to focus on the verbs. These are helpfully italicised – and for good reason.
MOSTLY INACTIVE: Carbon Brief analysis of the “global mutirão” text finds 69 inactive verbs, requiring no action, against 32 active verbs.

A powerful call echoed by over 80 countries rang through the halls of #COP30 during an afternoon press conference today, demanding a roadmap to transition away from fossil fuels!
And we warned them with our new 2025 State of the Climate Report which you can check out here: doi.org/10.1093/bios...
Headline in the Sydney Morning Herald “Third of voters want net zero gone as Coalition meets to decide position” by James Massola
Poll results which show between 54% of Australians supporting a net zero target. 31% say it should be abandoned.
The third option in the poll is worded “Australia should abandon the target, but still take action on emissions where it is affordable”.
Badly worded poll published by the SMH, which implies that it’s more costly overall/less affordable to reach net zero. Verging on a push poll.
Despite this, a majority of Australians still support net zero.
Beyond causing turmoil within the Federal Coalition, dropping net zero will likely bear a cost to Aussies.
Not only from the $$ of more disasters due to worsening climate change, but also in near-term lost investment opportunity in our renewable energy future.

A new report from @oilchange.bsky.social reveals that while most of the world has cut back on fossil fuel production since the Paris Agreement, four Global North countries (the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Norway) have increased oil and gas output by nearly 40%.

What we're witnessing with #Melissa is ultra rare in the history of known hurricanes in the Atlantic. This level of sustained intensity and feasting on every joule of ocean heat content without any real disruption is incredible.
Not hyperbole: Jamaica is facing a generational catastrophic event.

Gina Rinehart has railed against Labor’s 82 per cent renewables target, saying it will destroy industry. But her partly owned mine has achieved just that.
On efforts to combat climate change, the US has joined the ranks of countries like Iran, Russia, and Saudi Arabia in being critically insufficient, thanks to the Trump Admin’s rollback of virtually all climate policy.
Another one bites the dust.
Russia's oil & gas money machine is being demolished. Repairs were already hampered by sanctions on critical components from abroad, but skilled crews should also be in short supply by now.
MEDIA RELEASE: SA Premier spreads gas industry misinformation
Premier Peter Malinauskas told an event sponsored by the gas lobby that a new gas project in Narrabri, NSW, is needed to firm up SA's electricity supply.
Our research, using the government’s own data, proves this is simply not true.
