Every bike commute I see vehicles blocking crosswalks and 95% of the time my 311 request is closed with “vehicle gone upon arrival”, then they are back again and again and again. It’s infuriating.

Oof, yeah, we have something similar around here too (106 St south of 34 Ave). Probably one of the worst stretches of "infrastructure". I usually take the lane. Apparently improvements might be coming at some point this year with the Towards 40 program, so we'll see. www.edmonton.ca/transportati...

Yeah, it can definitely be a mixed bag but we are overall lucky to have a lot of the infrastructure we do have!

76 Ave to 106 St is also another way south, but past 51 Ave it turns rather dicey.

If you want to go further south, there is a nice bridge over Belgravia Rd leading to the LRT MUP past South Campus, which continues down 115 St behind the University farm - then behind the Whitemud Dr noise wall, you can cross WMD again to link with more MUPs further south, or loop back N by 122 St.

Either 112 or 111St South of 76 Ave would be perfect to continue the 110St separated lane. I often use those as alternates to the LRT MUPs. 72 Ave gets quite dicey at rush hour though, as it’s a significant bottleneck.

It would be just great if #yeg drivers could wait until I clear the intersection before creeping their multi thousand pound-heavy SUVs forward at me. #yegbike

For me, MUPs definitely depend on context - quiet neighbourhoods with minimal/no side street crossings are quite enjoyable, but on stroads with multiple parking lot entrances per block, or no separation from fast moving traffic, not so much.

Also, who else agrees that including a red light camera at all bike-triggered traffic lights would probably pay off a significant portion of active transport infrastructure (and new projects)? 🙄 #yegbike #yeg

Well, my bike and panniers turned into popsicles, but still a pleasant ride today. #yegbike #yeg

I'm just gonna tell myself that this has to be rage bait or some twisted contrarian writing assignment

If you didn't already think that our city driving culture was absolutely cooked, look no further than the person on the Edmonton subreddit arguing that exceeding the speed limit by 80km/hr is "probably safer" than going 80kmph on the Anthony Henday Drive during rush hour. 🤡 #yeg #yegbike

It does certainly feel like motorists air out a lot of pent up rage in the springtime, especially by speeding around neighbourhoods and such (to little benefit). Of course, putting the additional people enjoying the weather outside in danger.

Gotta love the oversized luxury SUVs, which are pretty much wrecking balls on wheels (and they more often than not drive like it).

I tend to think it’s a bit of a self-perpetuating cycle where pedestrians often give up their right of way in order to not get killed, leading to less vehicles actually stopping for pedestrians. Not ideal.

Oh, for sure. I also see the same calculus while cycling when people have no problem coming ridiculously close to me when overtaking, but will drive in opposing lanes to get past parked cars. Or pull out at side streets when I’m on bike, yet will wait when I’m in a vehicle (despite me signalling).

It sure feels like potential damage to their vehicles is a stronger deterrent than endangering lives, for a lot of people. Quite sad.

So frustrating. It’s not even ignorance (anyone who has a driver’s license should know that you can’t block a crosswalk or park on the sidewalk), it’s straight up entitlement that continues to go unchecked.

3 weeks ago 3 0 1 0

Made a 311 complaint about a parked vehicle completely blocking a crosswalk ramp 5 days ago, and it still hasn’t been actioned.

In case you’re wondering why so many people shamelessly illegally park in this city. #yegbike #yeg

This is the real barrier to winter cycling, not weather:

I agree! But then the sanding trucks then had to come through some of my routes and ruin a perfectly fine snowpack and turn it into a soupy mess (that might be the more unpopular opinion 🫣). #yegbike

An illustration of differences in snow clearing standards, contractor-maintained (Capital Line LRT expansion) vs. city-maintained… on the same stretch of pathway. We can do better. #yeg #yegbike

The potions with street parking bays are also directly in the door zone.

1 month ago 0 1 1 0

Unfortunately that is not what happens in practice, and nearby residences routinely blow their snow/leaves/dirt into the lanes. My point is that such narrow lanes bounded with unforgiving hard curbs is unnecessarily limiting to a lot of users.

Though, 106 St and 76 Ave are under tree canopies for the most part.

Also gets full of leaves in the fall and gravel in the spring. I also tend to think that this design makes it hard for cargo bikes, and pretty much anybody who wishes to go faster 20km/hr. I usually tend to avoid them.
