April 8, 2026

In the morning, I was in a shelter teaching displaced children the neuroscience of their own emotions. We talked about how the brain responds to stress. We explored the pink 3D brain model. We learned how to manage stress with some techniques.

On a day when regional ceasefire news briefly sparked a flicker of hope, it was met with an unimaginably vicious reality. Like a devil saying don't get hopeful with an evil smirk. As an educator and a researcher, I keep asking myself: What kind of therapy and an educational approach does a developing brain require to process this level of active terror?

We talk a lot about Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder. But there is no "Post" here. The trauma is continuous. It is the deafening sounds, the trembling walls, and the raw images flooding their phones.

In a world where we talk a lot about brain health and protection - I would really like to bring your attention to what Israel is doing to the brains of children in the region.

We'll keep saying education is hope. But it's particularly challenging when they keep bombing everywhere.

Continued comments from the British International School in Gaza:

Through this initiative, our BISG students explored the fascinating world of the human brain, crafted neurons from materials available around them, and shared meaningful reflections on resilience, trauma, and creativity.
Despite challenges, our students continue to connect, learn, and express themselves through science and art; proving that education and imagination truly know no boundaries.
A heartfelt thank-you to all the inspiring scientists, artists, and educators who made this collaboration possible.

An Important Update from IIE | IIE Effective March 14, some IIE team members who work on ECA-funded programs will be furloughed.

Amideast and IIE employees who manage the #Fulbright program were furloughed today. This is extremely concerning and I am thinking of all my fellow #Fulbrighters who still do not have tuition paid, and are just beginning their degrees.

A tremendous THANKS to young students in Gaza, whose compelling questions about racing thoughts before bed, fight or flight, memory, sleep, development, autism, and the power of art to heal we’ll be thinking about for a long time.

So excited to return!!

For this video to happen, I use:
Adobe Character Animator - for Happy's expressions.
ElevenLabs - for Happy's voice.
Capcut - for editing, effects, and AI generated captions.
Canva - for graphics.

Any more tools you recommend?

I have been enjoying making these videos and sharing them on Instagram. The Seahorse you see here is, Happy, the main character of my neuroscience platform, Neurochem Lab. His stories teach children about their brain and body. Any thoughts or recommendations?
