The One Step Down opened in 1963 with the best jazz jukebox in all the land, then becoming a live venue. You could hear the world’s best players in its intimate space. Ran the Wed nite jams its last year. This tune both celebrates it and mourns its demise.

State of the Union was a groovy, kooky Soviet-decor club on U Street that attracted every sort imaginable. We used to hold a Monday night jam session there thru much of the ‘90s. It closed at Sat vacant for many years. Peruvian chicken joint now.

Beautiful, in the midst of all the ugly. We moved into my childhood home on 7/20/69. I’m told that the first thing unpacked was the TV and we all gathered around to watch, but all I remember is breathlessly running loops on the sidewalks of my new neighborhood.
